Good morning everyone, I'm interested in what everyone thinks about this!

At what age is it appropriate to begin allowing girls to wear nail polish and makeup?

As a child I wasn't allowed to wear make up until high school. My mom believes very much that kids, especially girls should just be kids, and didn't want me to be too feminine from an early age..
I had a hard time with this as I was growing up, because I just wanted to fit in, but now that I look back, I think it's a good thing, because it makes people less aware of gender roles and sex discrimination and such- if both girls and boys are brought up to be equal, at least as children..
Anyway, I didn't mean to stray so much from the main question
So, what do you think?

I would say thirteen, but I am from the old school too. Even at thirteen I would start with polish and a little lipstick. Girls that young and pretty don't need foundation. Also eye makeup just hardens their looks and should be used very sparingly if at all. If I were going to do anything before then, I would be sure that the polish and lipstick were very tender colors of pink.

Thirteen or older. I am very traditional when it comes to that kind of things. I think young girls who wear makeup look terrible and half the time they don't apply it well at all and it looks like halloween makeup. Be natural as long as you can is my motto

High school. I didn't start wearing makeup until I was a sophomore in high school and that is only because my sisters and mom sorta forced me to.

I always was allowed to wear nail polish for special occasions like Christmas or Easter or wedding. BUT then it was only clear and my sisters always did my nails. I started to wear nail polish outside of events in middle school. But never got into it. I chip my nails to fast. BUT I still get them done for Christmas, Easter and formal events. and if I have to attend meetings I will paint them myself.

I started to wear alot of makeup in college...but it made my acne worse...I was wearing it to hide the acne. I finally gave up and saw a dermatologist who banned me from wearing makeup!!! I am alot happier acutally, less expense, more time in the morning, my skin looks much better. BUT I still wear eyemakeup. My dermatologist said that was fine. He was talking about foundation and coverup and powders.

I was around 12 or 13 when I started wearing lipstick to go to the movies with a bunch of friends. My Mom didn't know it tho since I waited to get to my friends house to apply the lipstick. I actually don't remember when I was allowed to wear it. I also started smoking around 12 years old and that was very bad. Of course my parents didn't know that either.

Nowadays things are so different, parents give them more leeway than my generation did.

Nigel, my friend, your problems are only just beginning!

Anyway, I would say 14 or 15 years old.

I've used nail polish since I was like 4. My mother would paint my nails, or friends would paint mine, and I'd paint there's (of course we wound up painting the whole finger tips
) That's how we entertained each other at sleep overs. I made the time to paint them when I was a teenager. I don't really bother with it anymore, plus my nails break easier when I paint them. Don't know why, another reason I don't paint them much anymore.

As for make up, no make up until middle school, 6th grade on.

I don't see anything wrong with kids wearing nail polish as long as they are old enough to do it themselves. I used to paint my nails all the time in elementary school (which over here is grades 1-6, middleschool is grades 7-9). Specially my leopard pattern nails were often adored..

But facial make up, not before teenage, which would be 13. Yeah, sure you can let kids try some lip gloss, but it is horrible to see 10 year old kids in full warpaint which is usually done very badly.. I slowly started to use heavier and heavier make up in 9th grade and first year in high school (when I was 15-16).
