Peanut is on a diet...

... and the poor thing is constantly begging me for food! His trip to the vet yesterday told DH and I what we already know- he's FAT! He's at 18lbs, and we need to get him down to 12.

The problem is, he's not taking too well to this whole diet thing, and is constantly begging for food and being just plain obnoxious about it. Is there anything that we can do to help him feel better in the meantime? I've taken to playing with him when he comes to me begging, but for a solid six hours... it gets kind of tiring.

I assume he'll get used to it eventually, but... any tips to make him happier and more comfortable would be very appreciated!

What kind of feeding routine do you have him on now? Brand of food, amount, frequency, etc.?

He's currently on Science Diet- that's what my vet recommended. It's the low-fat help your kitty lose weight type (the bag has been thrown away, we keep his food in a popcorn tin). He gets a scoop in the morning and a scoop in the evening, and the scoop itself is tiny- I believe it's 1/4 cup.

I know that you are not supposed to restrict a cats diet too drastically, or they get (oh I forget) some kind of liver ailment. It sounds like you are making too drastic of a cut. You should probably be reducing his food by 25% or so for a while, and then go for another cut. It is very dangerous from what I understand, to be to severe in the food change.

Oh no, that's scary! I'll start giving him a bit more, then- maybe one in the morning, one at lunch, one in the evening? My vet said that would be fine at first, so hopefully that will make Peanut a happier kitty.

This is a really good link to a thing about Fatty Liver Disease- Liver damage caused by weightloss.

Honestly, though, I think your vet would have taken this into account when he instructed you on the new diet. Sounds like Peanut would appreciate the extra cup at lunch, though! Haha.

Good luck on the weightloss for Peanut! :

^ I agree.

I'd keep the dry as is, and include a wet meal at lunch.

There are plenty of good brands, just look at the ingredients and try to avoid unnamed or byproduct meat sources. I like to go w/ a variety of flavors from various brands. Thats good protein content and its mostly water so will help feel full without excessive caloric intake, and the wet food is good to ensure hydration as well.

Thanks for the info, everyone!! Yeah, I'd hope he would have taken that into account... but just in case, and for my sanity, I'll give Peanut just a bit extra at lunchtime.

I've never given him wet food before... is there a particular brand you'd recommend? With my luck he'll inhale it and that'll be all he'll ever eat! Silly kitty!

I shop at Petsmart, and honestly I get various flavors of whatever happens to be on sale in the mid/premium isle and is "complete and balanced" (means it has everything they need for a complete diet). Unlike with dry, where transitions have to be very slow from one to another, I've never had issues mix-mashing wet brands and I learned my lesson trying to limit their flavors buying in bulk and give them something new every meal which they very much seem to enjoy.

Wellness, Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, Nutro Complete Care, Purine One (quality depends on flavor), etc. Couple of quick tips: ingredients are listed in order of uncooked volume, so first ones should always be a good meat protein, no mystery meat or byproduct if you can help it. corn and soy are allergens for most cats. rice is not bad, but brown/whole rice is better than brewers w/ is a byproduct rice. broth beats water. There's chunky in gravy and pate textures and the like, and from peeps I've talked to and my own cats, traditional pate seems to be most popular, but w/ a hungry kitty I doubt he'll be picky.

If you check online or in searches in this forum, wet food is well recommended. Its not as cost effective or convenient as dry, but has less fillers resulting in higher animal protein per dry volume (dry just seems higher since its already dehydrated and includes more plant protein sources on average), and the added moisture helps keep cats hydrated since many have such a low thirst drive (in the wild they get the majority of their moisture from their prey, so there is less instinct). Generally speaking, its also usually easier to maintain a kitty's weight on wet, as the water makes it more filling.

Most premium food manufacturers suggest including some wet food w/ their dry formulas, for a mixed diet, which is what I do for convenience and health.
