Cat likes to jump on tables and counters

We got a new cat about 5 months ago, and we are having a particularly hard time breaking her of jumping on the kitchen table and counter. We have tried all the obvious stuff.

We tried the spray bottle, but that's only good when you catch her in the act.
We tried double sided tape on the counter edges, but it didn't phase her.
Tried tin foil since cats don't like the feel of it, but of course she doesn't mind.
Tried wiping vinegar on the edges, but she actually licks the vinegar lol.
Also tried an indoor cat repellent, but it keeps her away for a total of about 5 minutes.

We had the idea that she's looking for twist-ties, clips, and pens (since she is always finding those around the house and carrying them to the living room), but even with a clear table she still jumps up there.

It's not like she doesn't have anything to jump on either. She can jump on beds, furniture, kitty condo, etc, but she really likes to get on stuff that gets her in trouble.

Are there any other options other than installing a door or gate?

We had the same problem with one of our cats, and the Scat mat really worked in deterring him from jumping on our kitchen counters. It wasn't cheap, but he no longer tries to jump up there and our whole household is happier because of it!

Hope this helps!

The mat is a great idea, although I tried something similar and one of our guys just walked over it like it wasn't even there.
There is also Ssscat, which has a sensor and sprays compressed air. I think its around 30 bucks on amazon or ebay. Tons of videos on youtube showing how they work (I laughed aloud at many of them).
You you can try lining the counter with cans that have screws or pennies in them...she knocks them off, it may scare her out of the habit. Good luck!

You just want to make sure that you associate the counter w/ the punishment, and not yourself, which wouldn't deter the cat and would just make it more concerned about your presence.

I have a SSSCAT and it works well IF they can't see it from the ground (otherwise they can just learn to check for it first), although personally I just let them jump up there, and instead have taught them that food that is not set in a very specific location on the floor outside of the kitchen is off limits.

So they may nudge closer very slowly (get a look or low grunt if getting too close heh), but stay a respectable distance when I'm preparing or eating my food, and I just wipe off the tables or counters before eating or preparing anything regardless as you can never be 100% sure they didn't walk up there right after stepping in their own poo in the litterbox.
