Buddy was a small grey male stray that had come around for eats for about 4 years. I hadn't seen him much in the last 9 months..once in June, once in October...then again Friday night. Except for his eyes he always looked fine. I felt sorry for his being out in our bitterly cold winters, but he always showed up in the Spring. A hurt paw healed a few years ago. All seemed to be fine..I always thought about him and was so happy to see him perched atop the porch rail looking in the backdoor window.

Up the stairs he came Friday night..I was so happy to see him..I noticed a matted bunch of fur on his left cheek/jaw..and when I felt it...it was frozen. Time to come in, I said. I brought the food bowl into the backroom....then I saw the worst injury on a cat in my whole life. From below his ear to where his head met his neck...was split open. There seemed to be two puncture marks....and I think I saw muscle. I got the cat cage and put him and his food into it. I knew he was cold and hungry and injured. He drank 2 1/5 bowls of water and 3 cans of cat food. He seemed weak.....but happy after his meal. I draped the carrier with a thick towel and placed him near the heat vent in the dining room and let him sleep the night there to warm up. He used the litter box in the morning. I knew he couldn't be mended. I suspected he had ocular herpes.....I have two indoor cats. I couldn't keep him, a Vet would charge thousands to fix him up and for what...he wasn't adoptable, I couldn't keep him, so I gave him a wonderful weekend of food, warmth, pettings, kisses, soft bed, freedom with me (my cats were a bit miffed)...and I hope, happiness.

How a cat with those injuries and sore eyes could purr, jump on the bed, asked to be petted...just have so much energy...where did he get it from? I took some beautiful pictures of him so relaxed looking while sleeping on the bed....the pictures beguiled the suffering. If he was suffering he wasn't showing it. Monday morning, I took him to the Humane Society. I knew what they'd do...and they did. He won't suffer out in the cold anymore, he won't know hunger or thirst, he won't know fear or abandonment...he'll only know love at the Rainbow Bridge. He was the sweetest cat, but doomed because of being an outdoor cat. He's loved and missed. My sweet Buddy.
Sorry this is so long...but he deserved some sort of 'obituary'....he warmed my heart every time I saw him.....

Thank you everyone for your kind words...they help to heal the heart. I bought a nice picture frame today, and Buddy will hang on the wall with my other dearly departed pets. He wasn't really my pet, but he sure liked to visit.....

I hope the picture of him uploads...you'll see how sweet he was.....and doesn't he look so relaxed and happy...and full and warm, too!!!

Thank you again for your kind words....

RIP Buddy. Life is short and hard for such cats. He was a dead ringer for our BK Wickett.

Thanks to you, Buddy knew much love in his final hours. I'm sure he loves you in return for it.

Rest peacefully, sweet Buddy.
It's sad that you are gone, but at least now you are at peace & happy with no more pain & suffering.

Thank you mrBlanche and KittKatt for your kind words. Yes, outdoor life is very hard here...especially with our very cold winters. The few times that I brought Buddy in during some bitterly cold nights...he was obsessed with getting back out again after he ate and got warmed up....he was an outdoor cat.

This past weekend, he made no such move to leave....and that's how I knew he must have been feeling poorly....but he ate and drank and used the litter box like a trouper!! I hope he felt my love for him.....he certainly was happy to be petted and have me sit with him while he slept so comfortably.

He'll always be in my heart...he was such a little love...

Buddy was a beautiful boy, and you know what, you are a beautiful person to have cared for him so long. Those last days of his life you showered him with love, care, kindness, joy and comfort. He knew you loved him and he came back to you so you could give him that last gift. I am sorry for your Buddy. Now he is pain-free and at peace forever.

RIP
beautiful grey boy Buddy

Oh my goodness, such a sweet - bittersweet - story. Buddy was one very lucky boy to have chosen you as his.
I can't imagine how difficult the weekend was for you, but what a wonderful, selfless thing you did.

Rest peacefully, Buddy.

Thank you, Feralvr and Laurie, for your kind, supportive words. I like to think that Buddy came to me in his time of pain and need. Your words brought tears to my eyes as I think about the joy that Buddy brought to me just by his lovely, sweet personality...

I have to believe that he is at peace, out of pain, and romping around in the wonderworld of the Rainbow Bridge...
I can't wish him back to go through his pain again, so I wish him all the comforts and joy and good life of where he is now.

I have his pictures and his memories....I'm the lucky one....
He'll never be forgotten...

I'd just like to share this with you...everyone who gave me such wonderful support in the loss of my little stray cat, Buddy.

This morning while lying in bed...it was light out, but too early to get up...I heard a group of sparrows (probably) right close to my window...chirping, tweeting, just a riot of noise.....and I wondered where the heck did they came from....it's cold here, lots of snow...and I don't have any trees near my second floor window.

All of a sudden..I realized..I bet it's Buddy sending those birds to tell me that he's happy, healthy, and having a wonderful time at the Bridge. A terrible cloud of sadness lifted from me...and I just knew that he had arrived and was going to be fine.

When I got up and looked at his picture, I smiled, I felt happy, knowing that he was okay. Those birds chirped and carried on for about 60 seconds...and there's nothing there to attract them. Call me a nutcase
, I don't mind....but that's what I believe!!!

Buddy...I love you...have fun...you'll never be forgotten...and I'll see you again...along with Wayne, Max and Phoebe....
love, your 'mom'...xo

Thank you Robin. I'm not the only one who cares for these homeless creatures...I just wish that I could find a loving home for all of them....that would be my dream come true. For now, I just do the best I can...feed them and provide winter shelter and hope they make it through till Spring.

They are all special to me. I'm sure that you'd do the same....it's what an animal lover does!!!
