Overly Clingy Cats

I live in a furnished basement, well it's where my bedroom and a few spare rooms are with a washer and dryer. (They have a huge floor to ceiling window to look out) When I moved in, I moved down there because my roommates sibling is deathly allergic to cats and sometimes comes over.
I don't mind this, and I stay down there a majority of the day with them because I feel bad and because... well, they don't really let me go upstairs.
The bathroom, kitchen, and main living area is up there. And whenever I go up to eat or shower or anything they both wait at the top of the door. Meowing and pawing under it like crazy. Like I've abandoned them.

I've had them checked out by the vet, and they are BOTH healthy. They have each other so what's going on? Sometimes I need space and I feel so guilty.

I don't work so they aren't used to someone being gone I guess. But should I cave in all the time and just be downstairs? I can't financially move out right now. I need some suggestions if you have them

They just love you and want to be with you! My cat is like that. If I go to the bathroom, he cries outside the door like I've died or something. They do seem to have a way of making you feel bad...but if you need your space, go and chill. They'll get over it. :P
You could always go upstairs at certain times each day so its sort of like a routine and they can get used to it. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry to much about it. Some cats don't like to be "locked away" from their owners (or pets, rather ) But I wouldn't stress it.

lol my cat does that too, even for a couple of minutes to go to the bathroom the cat follows me, after i open the door he is sitting outside of it looking at me, or he starts running around like crazy like he hasn't seen me in ages or something.

when i go out of the apartment and my partner is at home the cat will act crazy and jump about everywhere and start to look around for me, that is what my partner says he does when i am away.

LOL I started leaving the bathroom door cracked open because otherwise one of the cats would either cry outside the door or jiggle the doorknob! Or they'd rush into the bathroom ahead of me and then complain when I locked them in while I was in there.
Of course this hasn't helped too much because now instead of the above, they open the door when I'm in there or come in with me and then pull open the door to leave. One of my cats, Blaze, will jump up on the sink and use his paws on the doorknob to pull open the door (when it's cracked).

One of my four cats, Rudy, has such separation anxiety that if we put him away in the living room with the door closed, he will get on top of the fireplace mantle next to the door, reach over, hook his paws in the space at the top of the door and let go of the mantle so he's hanging from the top of the door. Needless to say, the door is completely scratched up now from his hind paws scrabbling as he hangs there...

Oh Goodness Gracious, how. I am trying to picture your cat hanging from the top of the door Cats are such amazing little creatures and they are all so intelligent. All five of my cats always want to be where I am. I can't lock them in or out of any room if I am behind that door. I have those door handles with the lever's. Perkins is my tall boy, and he will stand and reach for the door handle and spring it, BOING BOING BOING, it drives me crazy. He isn't strong enough, YET, to actually unlatch the door but he is getting close.

She jumps in there when it's dry and watches me us it all the time. She won't go in it though when it's wet

I have 4 cats and all four of them are the same way. When I'm in the bathroom, all 4 of them are in there bossing me around. They seem to know when I'm leaving the house for any extended period of time because they will settle into their routines. When I run outside to get the mail, or work in the garden I can hear my male Snowshoe, Ramsey, crying by the door. He's the wuss in the family. I can carry him around all day and he is quite content. The other 3 cats are females. None of them like to be held or carried around but they love to snuggle and are always interested in being in the same place that I am.
