Right on the dot at 3:30 AM my kitten will wake me up whether it had been sleeping peacfully next to me or out in my living room playing all night. She will lick my face non stop. At first I thought maybe she's hungry.. Even though she has access to crunchers. So I give her her half can. She'll eat a little and I'll go back to bed. A few minutes later she will be determined to get back into my room than she'll go back to licking my face! I can't figure out a way to get her to stop with out haveing to put her outside of my room. She'll just meow and scratch at my door ther rest of the morning.
I don't understand it. If I allow her to lick my cheek for however long she wants to she'll settle down right next to my face and go back to sleep. But if I try to stop her she'll just get even more determined and nuzzle at my hands lick my arm a little and work her way back up to my face! I have not had a full nights sleep in a long time. It's the only time during the day she has a strong urge to groom me.

They definitely have their own biorhythm. Sometimes a kitten is just not independent enough to come up with ways to keep herself entertained, so she turns to you. I would strongly advise getting another kitten of the same age (or, if you got her recently, one of her littermates may still be available for adoption, which would be perfect - it's always best for the kitten to be adopted together with its littermate.)

I try to make sure she gets in a good play session right before bed, but no matter what I do, it's like clockwork when she wakes me up every morning.

I have a similar issue with my only female. Luckily she doesn't stare at the clock, but if my cell phone makes a sound (whether it's the alarm, txt message or a phone call) or if I turn off the heating mattress (it makes a tiny click sound) or do anything which she would count as "oh, she's awake!", she will come running to me and starts licking my face. If my face is hidden she will lick my hands, hair, anything she can and purr like crazy. After I've been ignoring her for a while (or cuddling if I'm actually wake enough) she will curl up beside me and start napping.
