My kitten is determined to lick my face in the AM

Right on the dot at 3:30 AM my kitten will wake me up whether it had been sleeping peacfully next to me or out in my living room playing all night. She will lick my face non stop. At first I thought maybe she's hungry.. Even though she has access to crunchers. So I give her her half can. She'll eat a little and I'll go back to bed. A few minutes later she will be determined to get back into my room than she'll go back to licking my face! I can't figure out a way to get her to stop with out haveing to put her outside of my room. She'll just meow and scratch at my door ther rest of the morning.
I don't understand it. If I allow her to lick my cheek for however long she wants to she'll settle down right next to my face and go back to sleep. But if I try to stop her she'll just get even more determined and nuzzle at my hands lick my arm a little and work her way back up to my face! I have not had a full nights sleep in a long time. It's the only time during the day she has a strong urge to groom me.

I think she's waking you up because she's bored and wants to play with you. My kittens wake up at about the same time, and then they run around and play till about 9 am. And then they sleep all day They definitely have their own biorhythm. Sometimes a kitten is just not independent enough to come up with ways to keep herself entertained, so she turns to you. I would strongly advise getting another kitten of the same age (or, if you got her recently, one of her littermates may still be available for adoption, which would be perfect - it's always best for the kitten to be adopted together with its littermate.)

If you can't get another cat for any reason, you could also try some extreme playtime before you go to bed. Letting her chase a laser around or whatever, try to tucker her out as best as you can. I had to do that with our youngest for a while...I'd do everything I could to keep him awake all evening. Any time he tried to sneak off for some sleep, I'd get him back up and play...eventually he got used to the fact that we do sleep at night and now he sleeps all night too.

Consider yourself lucky that she only licks your face! Mine wakes me up every morning between 2:00 and 3:00 as well, but she does it by leaping - not onto the bed - but onto my stomach, which can be a VERY rude awakening! She will lay on me, knead me, and headbutt my hands to get scritches. I try to make sure she gets in a good play session right before bed, but no matter what I do, it's like clockwork when she wakes me up every morning.

LOL Kismet had to start sleeping in his own room due to his 3 am antics. It didn't matter what I did he was there all slobbery and snotty (he had a bad cold at the time ) rubbing it on my face. I even tried to cover my face with a blanket, he found a way in and still slobbered all over me!

When he is a bit older we may re-visit sleeping with mommy but for now he has his own room where he sleeps at night. Or plays if that is his desire.

Although thats not fullproof either. Been woken up by them playing with each other on the bed on top of me, so put a ssscat by the door. Unlike a physical barrier, they just avoid the area, rather than scratching at it and sticking their claws under the door meowing. Overall though, so glad they can chase each other around and wrestle and what not to keep each other active and entertained, especially when I'm away.

I have a similar issue with my only female. Luckily she doesn't stare at the clock, but if my cell phone makes a sound (whether it's the alarm, txt message or a phone call) or if I turn off the heating mattress (it makes a tiny click sound) or do anything which she would count as "oh, she's awake!", she will come running to me and starts licking my face. If my face is hidden she will lick my hands, hair, anything she can and purr like crazy. After I've been ignoring her for a while (or cuddling if I'm actually wake enough) she will curl up beside me and start napping.
It's cute but can be annoying if I'm really trying to sleep. She has food available all the time and friends to play with so I think it's just the attention what she wants.

My apartment wont allow me to get another cat. So I can't get a kitten playmate for her. It's funny, when I finally get up after being woken by her I'll g sit down and watch the morning news before getting ready for work and she'll jump into my lap and fall asleep. So I know it's not because she wants to play. Maybe she just wants to be cuddled? I've never had a cat or kitten act like that before. They were usually more independant, even of other cats.

Around that time, my cats are finished with their nightly activities and ready to settle down for a nap or breakfast. Maybe your kitten is questioning why your body clock is so different from hers.

My kitten is doing this right now, I have had her for about 4nights and every night when I go to bed she jumps up and licked at my mouth and eyes while purring very loudly. She eventually falls asleep after I hide my face so many times. She understand that we are going to sleep so it is very doubtful that it is attention. After research on cat behavior it is most likely a kitten that has not been weened off its mother properly, or not given the oppurtunity to finish the cylce of a catmother bond. I don't really have a solution, I just hide my face under a pillow until she gives up. I also, in a playful manner, push her face back. The same way I do to show her its not okay to walk on the computer key board or chew up wires, which seems to be working as it did with my older cat.

Nothing really constructive to add but I have three that are determined to cover me in cat spit. They do the licking as they settle in for the night and I am finally conditioned to half wake up, pet whoever is slobbering and go back to sleep. FWIW, two were weaned too early, Da Lip on purpose (NOT by me, he was a foundling) and, Da Magpie was accidental weaningĀ - momma wandered off and never came back but Tippy's obscession, I do not understand as he was not weaned early but probably later than normal and never was in the house until two winters ago......maybe he is just grateful for a warm place.
