Poor Kirby...legs still hurting

A few weeks ago my eight month old Kirby started limping around. The vet took x-rays and said that he has panosteitis (much more common in puppies) and gave him some pain medication. It will go away on it's own eventually but poor Kirby is still struggling with walking.

We just got back from being in Mexico for the week and Kirby started peeing on the floor in front of the litter box this weekend. I'm sure that this is just a combination of his sore back legs and the fact that all of the cats were sad that we were gone so long but I hate to see him like this.

I called the vet this morning and she gave me some prednisone to try for him and I'm really hoping it makes him feel better. Right now all he wants to do is curl up in my lap and cuddle and while I absolutely love his cuddles I want to see him run around and wrestle again.

I love my vet but I'm just wishing there was something more I could do for him. I have not had to deal with chronic health problems in my kitties yet so I'm wondering if anyone has any advice/ideas for me.

The peeing issue may be a urinary tract infection caused from the stress of you being gone. I'd have a urinalysis done to find out if that's the case with the peeing, just to rule out anything medically causing that.

I'm sorry I can't help with the other problem, but hope you find a solution or some help soon.

Hi,

Prednisone injections were really helping my Jasmine for the past few months before things went downhill. Hope Kirby is better soon....

Regards,
Keith

I thought about a uti because I know they can be brought on by stress but I'm almost positive he doesn't have one. I called the vet this morning and she thought he didn't need to be seen just yet. Our boxes have pretty high sides and she said that the unstable surface of the litter might be hurting his sore legs too. I went and got him a pan with a lower side today so hopefully that will take care of the peeing problem.

It's just hard seeing him in pain for so long. All I could think about on vacation was him and hoping he was doing all right. We had a neighbor in every day for food/water/litter/medication duty and my sister-in-law's family spent a few hours cuddling him over the weekend too.

I think I'm just hoping someone will have a story about a pet that went through this and came out fine

I had a cat that had a severe URI recently, but never had any that had a UTI. Hopefully they can come up with an answer for you. I also would think that a urine sample should be able to determine what is wrong.

I wonder if something like a cake pan would work for a litter box for him? The sides wouldn't be as high and you wouldn't need to put the litter so deep.

I got a new litter pan for him with really low sides today and I'm thinking of cutting a little doorway so he can just walk right in. The vet also said he might be having trouble balancing in the litter. I'm not too upset by the peeing...he's only going on the linoleum and I just want his legs to feel better. My kitties are my family and I can't stand when they are sick or hurting. I am so glad I can say that here without feeling like a weirdo
