Static electricity

I will be surprised if this is unique.

It is cold here, the air is dry and when I pet Captain I often get sparks. He does not seem to mind.

Anyone else with a cat who has an electrifying personality?

I keep my condo fairly warm during the day time so there is a lot of static built up. Ritz doesn't like static electricity. I try to wet my fingers or brush my fingers across a non-conducting surface like a wall before petting her.

Parker used to be REALLY bad for that...changing his diet actually helped a little.
I get shocks from Buddy all the time. The worst is when he touches his nose to mine and we get zapped. He used to scared of them and run away and hide but he is used to it now.

All of the kids are full of static this time of year and I hate it. I don't want them to associate me petting them with shocks, but they always seem to forgive me.

I live in a very dry climate too, and a lot of times when I pet Holland she gets a little ZAP! Poor baby... She doesn't really seem to mind it though...

Yup, was thinking of duct-taping a grounding strap to their tails....

This thread really had me giggling. We've got three humidifiers going on our small space (we're in an RV) - but it's still not enough to stop the static electricity. That very first shock is always funny, but they get over it.

Even our most recent rescue (a feral kitty, 3 or 4 years old) was... shocked... at first , but he forgave us.

I'm surprised no one else in the thread uses humidifiers! I run them for my own health and comfort, and keep the bedroom around 50% (that's not easy this winter). They will solve your problem. Unfortunately, I also use ion generators to clean the air, and they actually create static! so, we just live with it. It's funny - has anyone ever experienced petting the cat on one part of her body while holding another, and feeling the charge go right through her body and zap the hand that's not doing the petting! My cats are used to it, but it's so weird...

I've noticed it's different with different cats. Lynxx I got a couple of shocks from in his later years. Not when he was little. Luna once in a great while I'll get a shock when patting her. Midnight I get shocks from all the time! Especially when we first got him. I notice he's more staticy in his fur. Also if I touch his nose. It's gotten better, but when he first came here, it was like every single time I touched him.

I run a couple of warm air humidifiers in my house, all winter long. Not only does it eliminate the static, it also makes the house feel warmer.

Tails loves static electricity. He especially loves it when I pet him backwards on a static-y day. He treats the sparks like a shiatzu massage and totally lounges out.

You mean it is like a spark party at night under the covers with all of the sparks. Just turn up the humidifier!!! I have to constantly turn it up or down according to the temps.

Tails doesn't get along with the cheap frog-shaped humidifier I had for college. He's gotten into a couple fights with it when the mist is coming out. I usually have to break them up when the frog's head pops off.

If you put a little bit of lotion on your hands before petting, it should mostly take care of it

If it's a "sparky" day in my house, I rub mine with an unscented dryer sheet, and he's pretty good to go for the rest of the day. Not to mention, he seems to love his Bounty rubs.
