Alice's Dental

I am really not happy with the vet that I took my cats to previously. First diagnostics weren't done for Patch's to find out what was going on with him and therefore try to come up with a plan to try to control the problem. I took Alice in to the new vet for a checkup. Alice gets very stressed at the vet's. The vet I used to go to never really gave her a good going over. She said she didn't want to stress her out to much but I think it was because she was afraid of her. This vet stuck with it even though she started hissing and growling and gave her a good going over. I took her in this week for a dental and they just called me and she needs four teeth pulled including her two canines. Who knows how long her mouth has been hurting her and how many flareups where Patches was so sick that could've been avoided. Alice doesn't care for canned food and I know that they pretty much swallow kibble whole but I went and got a couple small cans of several different kinds. Maybe she will be more likely to eat a little soft food while she is healing.

Aw sweetie, I'm sorry! for you and for Alice. I can't tell whether or not you're going to be looking for a new vet - or whether this dental is a result of seeing a new vet. But for your babies.

Lots of healing for Alice. She might not need the soft food, but it's worth a try. Our last cat had to have half his teeth removed at once, and he was eating canned and kibble the next day. He would eat anything, though (former feral).

I'm so sorry that Alice has to have so many teeth pulled!

To get her to eat can food try doing this: heat it up in the micro for her. That's how I get Midnight, to eat his can kitten food. He loves it. Luna does to.

Get well Alice.

Hi,

I've never encountered dental problems with any of my cats, but then again, I really didn't do much in the way of taking care of cat teeth either. My dog hardly has any teeth left at all though. The last time they pulled teeth she lost, I think, like 13 teeth.

Hope Alice is feeling better....

I just got home with Alice. I thought she would go under the bed and stay there but she's running around like nothing happened. She is on pain medicine though. She ended up losing 5 teeth. She came home with 4 doses of Buprenex for pain and an antibiotic called Antirobe. She can have pain medicine after 10 tonight and she is good for antibiotic until tomorrow. She goes back in 2 weeks for a recheck on the extractions. The following week Patches goes back for another liver panel and hopefully another reduction in his steroid dosage. Hopefully sometime soon both kitties will get through all this. I know Patches will probably always have to go back a couple of times a year for bloodwork and will always be on a small steroid dosage.
