well, my husband went in for a diabetes test Monday, and the results are in..they call on our home phone, and of course he is at work and they won't even tell me the results since my name isn't on the papers!!!
I have tried calling Steve to tell him, and he said he was going to call them, but it has been an hour now, and I am an emotional wreck not knowing what they are!...why do doctors offices have to be like this? I mean, I am his wife! I am just a little bothered by this as if you can't tell...aarrggghhhh

Everyone will be having this problem, because the laws changed this past April. Everytime you go to the doctor that you have not seen since April 2003 there are new forms authorizing people they can talk to about you. I signed a form at one doctor stating they can give out my results to whoever answers my home phone. One doctor gave me a code number to give when I call so they know they are talking to me

"Breathe deeply and pet a cat!" As far as I know, ALL docs are that way. Mine wouldn't even tell my husband the results of my pregnacy test, I had to call back later ! (It was neg.) But if it is diabetes, trust me, it aint' the end of the world either. I am 34 years old, and was diagnosed with it two years ago. It is very treatable, just requires a few dietary changes. But if you need to talk, message me, and I'll get back As soon as I can ( I''m at work, but I check in FREQUENTLY!)

Hey come on - they call you on you on your home phone - well it could go either way. Assuming the worst, if diabetes is present, there is no reason that it should affect your life in the slightest. Okay - you may have to carry a bar of chocloate in your handbag (why do women have to have so much stuff in their handbags- my wife has one and she can tell you what floor anything is on at any time - its like a shopping mall gone wrong - why do you have to carry so much?). Anyway, you will be able to put a chocloate bar in pocket number 300 (as you all have stacks of pockets in them) and keep it there. He will learn to recognise if not feeling too good as its not an instant wham - its a gradual decline. He would have a little kit thing that he will take with him - pricks his finger once a day- a tiny bit of blood ( which to us men is open surgery and gives us a need of band aid, sympathy, getting out of doing the dishes etc and a cold beer to recover) and a few seconds later - he gets a little thing that tells him if his blood sugar is low and if he needs a boost.
Its not - if it is diabetes - life threatening and even though the hospital wont tell you the results - and at the end of the day in my eyes, you are like my wife, entitled to whatever is on file you should know - you are there and having a wife that cares is worth more than anything. I would rather have the love of my wife than anything on earth - without her I am nothing and sure your husband feels the same way.
I know about 30 diabetics in my office and with my hobby - some work on computers, some are doctors and surgeons, one flies airplanes (I can fly) and it does not affect their lives at all.
The biggest loss to a man (as it would be to me ) would be the love of my wife ( the second biggest loss is on monday at 3.30 for me snip snip :-(- trying to smile through the knowledge that tonight I bought two bags of frozen peas to put on what will be the swollen area), so come on chuck, keep your chin up and whatever, the results, from here in the UK where I am about to head off for an early night, try to meditate and goto sleep - you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Kev
Wondering can an aethiest purchase insurance for acts of god and hoping he made you smile for a few seconds???

I had a blood test two years ago and the results were my blood sugar was way too high. The doctor said I probably had it. I said NOOOOOO way. Diabetes does not run in my family....and I am not overweight. I did a ton of research and found out that inactive people will sometimes show false results. I was unemployed at the time for two months at the time and was a couch plant at the time. I suddenly became more active through excercise......and two weeks later I went back for a retest...and everything was normal.
My doctor was amazed!

Well, I just found out something..
I ended up talking to the nurse and she gave me some information about his results since he OK'd it that they tell me..
The test results from Steve's blood work..umm...I can't think of the medical term but it has something to do with the thyroid..something that can cause heart disease....I am stressing more than doing good I guess but at least now I know....just wanted to let you all know what's up though...

Ok..I have some completely different news now..Steve came home and there is some bad news...I talked to the nurse and the word I was trying to think of is triglycerites..It is way up high..the normal range for this should be as high as 200 but his is over 700...He may be a candidate for congenitive heart disease
He goes in for more tests Tuesday to see if that is what he has.....I am super bummed yall

Kathy, I am sorry you have to go through this. I looked up triglycerides and I think its mainly to do with cholesterol.
There are lots of factors, and it says that if you lower your cholesterol, the triglyerides will lower as well.

All about Triglycerides

The reason that you were getting the run around with the doctor's office is because of the new Federal Privacy Rule (HIPAA) that went into effect 4/14/03.
Hospitals, Doctors, etc. are not allowed to release patient related information of any kind to anyone other than the patient unless the patient has given permission (usually in writing). It's pretty complicated and makes everyone nervous.

As for your husband's high triglycerides, there are medications to help lower cholesterol levels. My mom has to take them. Increasing exercise & modifying diet may help also. I'm sure that his doctor will help him devise a plan.

Good luck (try not to make yourself sick with worry).

I understand your frustration. It's an unfortunate thing but not the doctors fault. His hands are tied by all the new privacy laws. Even pharmacy's have to have one person at the counter at a time now and the line has to be so many feet back from the counter. Hope you hear soon. I hate waiting too! I'm not the most patient person in the world!

Kathy, IMO this just means that your husband is at risk for heart disease if he doesn't make some changes in his lifestyle. If he follows all the medical advice he is given, and takes better care of himself, he can do a lot to prevent heart disease from ever occuring.
