DH and I went to a concert last night. The venue was very small... as in only room for about 100-200 people. The first band was extremely loud! We couldn't understand a word they were singing!

The second band was just as loud, but one of the guys from the radio station, (I had won the tickets from the local Christian radio station) gave us each a set of earplugs. It was at least tolerable. We could at understand what was being said and sang.

The young teens and kids were up front really getting into the music, without the earplugs.

I remember a time when I loved the loud music, but not anymore. Maybe it would have been better in a larger venue or outdoors like the last concert we went to there.

Sigh.... I guess I am getting to old for this.

Oh yes, I am definitely too old for loud music. I used to love driving with music playing. Now just give me some peace and quiet.

Someone once joked that loud rock music was a commie plot to make our youth unable to pass a military draft physical, thus leaving us open to conquest.

As good a theory as any, I guess.

There's nothing wrong with you. This is an actual problem with the "sound engineers", those handling the mixing and levels. Many don't do a very good job or just turn everything all the way up. To further complicate matters on multiband tours each band may have their own sound engineer and each of them with vary levels of competency. The common trend is that usually at any show the openers (smaller bands, usually) sound horrible and the main haedlining band sounds great (more money to pay a better sound engineer and for better equipment).

Years ago I saw Rob Zombie in concert, the sound for his show was great. Lacuna Coil, who then and now are in their right a popular band with money, sounded terrible. The vocalists were lost in the mix completely and it was overly loud.

So no, it's not you or anyone else that thinks concerts are too loud. Any band you see live you should always wear earplugs to. The younger crowd you see up front without them likely go to more shows and have damaged their ears well beyond repair. They don't notice because the damage has already been done. That you noticed means your ears are in better shape and technically if you had them tested your hearing range may actually test "younger" than typical for your age group. (where as frequent concert goers would test poorer/older)

I don't think I could handle all that noise at a concert (or the crowd for that matter!
), but when I put my earplugs in, I crank it up as loud as I can stand it - especially if it's Adam Lambert!
And I'm 52 years old!

I always said that if I ever get too old that I don't like my (loud) music, it's time to call it quits!
