Home pregnancy test question

I've gotta ask SOMEONE!

Ok, my last period was November 25, 2010. As I believe I'm going through perimenopause (since 2005), but my only symptom has been the once or twice a year missing a period, no hot flashes, moodiness, facial hair, etc. I had one or two heavy periods, but basically, they are normal. I've NEVER missed 2 periods in a row. In late December, I took 2 tests; both were negative, but I goofed up on one in my half-asleep state, and urinated on the wrong part of the thing (ok, LAUGH). I always have done them in a cup, so I can be excused! I haven't taken a test since then.

Since around that time, though, my breasts have been SORE and tender, getting worse every week. Now, they feel heavy, as well. No darkening of the aureolae that I can see (but I'm very fair-skinned). I have been feeling a bit tired lately, but nothing bad. I've actually, for once, have been sleeping very well. A two weeks ago, it felt almost as if my period was going to arrive--but it didn't, and the breast thing has been worse since then. I haven't felt nauseous really, but the past 2 weeks or so, a tiny bit sometimes in the afternoon; eating something salty (been craving salt, and I dislike salty food) seems to stop it. My acne has finally seemed to mostly clear up! I never had a bad case of it, but have always had small break-outs since puberty at age 10. Now, when I skipped a period before, I did get breast soreness, as I do 3 days before my period, but it went away during my "phantom period". This had stayed since the first missed period in December.

We use barrier birth control, but that can fail, though, if used properly, should have a high success rate.

I've just read about women even older than me being told they couldn't be pregnant, taking home tests, which were negative, though they are definitely pregnant at 24-26 weeks! I'm starting to get a bit scared, ladies! I knew that sometimes the pregnancy hormone is not prevalent enough in some women early on, and therefore, there may be a false negative on a home test, but not THAT far into a pregnancy!

Any ideas?? Thanks!

I would take another test!

My DH's aunt had her soon a couple years ago - she was 47.

Really, instead of agonizing over it just make a doctor's appointment and have them test. Either you will be or you won't be, and if you're not maybe there's another cause for some of the symptoms that needs to be looked into. In the end, better safe than sorry.

I would just call your doc for a blood test. And buy a good name brand POS (pee on a stick) test. If you are pregnant your HGC (HCG?) should be rapidly increasing so more easily detected by home tests. I always use the first response ones.

Since it is the weekend go to the 99 cent store or similar, buy the type of test you are familiar with (you mentioned you are used to pee in a cup test) and then wait. It is called New Choice and it detects smaller amounts than many other tests. http://www.fertilityplus.org/faq/hpt.html
They are effective and not expensive. Buy a few.

Best 2 out of 3? 3 out of 5? Then you can really be sure, LOL.

My grandma's neighbor had a baby when she was 54. She didn't know she was pregnant until she went into labor. I'm not sure how someone can go that far without figuring it out (I would think the baby kicking would be a big clue), but it happens.

Oh, boy! The tender breasts would be a huge indication for me. I'd make an appointment just to be sure...

Time to see the dr

I would definetely see a dr, I have 3 children and I do get alot of "pregnancy" symptoms before my period, I have a copper coil as bc but every month I seem to get a bit worried and do a test. If in doubt defo get a professional opinion. x

Your doctor would be able to tell you for sure

Go to your doc and get a test done there. My mom tested negative repeatedly with both me and my brother. Those tests don't always work for everyone, especially if you have low levels of HCG.

Definitely get a doctor administered pregnancy test I was still getting negative pee on a stick tests - including at the doctor's! They eventually did a blood test and confirmed I was about 8 weeks pregnant, which explained a few things.

A blood test is the most accurate way, but in the meantime, get a digital early response test - those things are really accurate, and very easy to read!

Could be a hormonal imbalance. Have you seen a doctor about the perimenopause? It's recommended to go when you first start to experience those types of symptoms, to make sure it actually is perimenopause, and not something like an illness that's causing the missing periods.
If you haven't seen a doctor about that anyway, now is a good time!

I took a test, and it's negative. And guess what little fiend/friend came to visit a few minutes ago?

Oh, well--at least I can go back to drinking Diet Pepsi without guilt (I was afraid to do so, due to the artificial sweetener!)!

If you were so concerned that it would harm a baby, do you honestly think it's safe for you? It can cause some pretty crazy symptoms in some people as it makes them sick.

Do try to get in to see your doc anyways for a check up.

I can never honestly drink diet pepsi and be guilt free!! The artificial sweeteners really scare me!!
i agree you should go to the doctor just in case, not having a period for that long is something you should have checked out.

I use a small amount (up to 97 servings a day is considered safe for Aspartame, which would be an enormous amount of diet soda, BTW) of artificial sweeteners as I am a diabetic. Even though my diet plan allows a rather generous amount of sugar, it really packs the weight on me, which can make my blood sugar go up. I have to face the fact that I am addicted to sweets, and to me, it's worth the trade-off. I'm talking about no more than 3 diet sodas a day, and some Equal in the occasional dessert and on cereal (2 packets per day on my cereal). I've been using it since 1995, with no ill effects. I too, have always been concerned about the possible side effects of artificial sweeteners, but I have done my homework on the various types.

I too used aspartame for a good 10 years, and thought it was a good trade off because it kept my weight down - if I couldn't drink diet I'd be drinking regular soda and that would make me pack on a lot of weight!
But, about a year or so ago I decided to stop all together, because even though the FDA considers it safe unless it's in enormous quantities, I haven't seen a single study that proves that. Well, in mice yes but not in humans. There haven't been any trials where humans have had 97 servings of stuff with aspartame every day over a long period of time, that would be the only way for me to accept it's safe...
It sounds like you only have diet soda in moderation, which is good- I used to drink it in place of water, I'd have a 12 pack a day

How accurate do you WANT the test to be? I think that's the crucial question, isn't it?

I have no concerns about aspartame. Or Equal. Or Splenda. Or saccharine.

In fact, I think we are way too concerned about a lot of things, to the point that we're not being exposed to the normal rigors of life that toughen us up for...yes, you guessed, life.

Congratulations on not being pregnant!
As for the really sore breasts, let me tell you---you don't have to be pregnant for that. I started going thru peri-menopause starting at age 37, and had my final (yea!) period 13 years later! In my late 40s my breasts would get so tender I could hardly stand it; even my bra rubbing on them was painful. Mind you, I wasn't taking any sort of HRT (and I still don't); that extreme tenderness was cyclical, whether I was having a period that month or not.
I've come to the conclusion that what's 'normal' menopause for one woman is unheard of for another. IMO, you might want to see a good ob/gyn for a thorough check-up. Before I was diagnosed with peri-menopause I kept a journal for several months of all my complaints/syptoms and just when they occurred in relation to my period.
BTW, I haunted our local Walgreens for a year, hoping that those missed periods were just that--missed periods--and not a precursor of something to come.
