Cat and Couch

Is it dangerous for Leiki to go into the couch?

We have a pull out couch, today I watched her squeeze her way between the wall and the back of the couch and slip down to the floor, then weasel underneath. I just assumed she went under the couch so I left her and went and had a nap. Came back about an hour later and couldn't find her, so I assumed she was still under there. Looked under, nope not there. Then I thought she might be in the back of the couch where the mattress goes, so I pulled off the slip cover and cushions, then shook her treats. She popped her head down but didn't come out. I eventually pulled the bed out and she came out. I'm 90% sure she can get out on her own, but I got her out anyways and blocked the way I saw her go in with a blanket.

My question is if it's dangerous for her to be up there? There is a lot of space between where the mattress goes up there and doesn't seem to be anything that she can get caught on. When I pulled it out I stuck my head up there and took a look, I also stuck the camera up there and snapped a shot when it was closed to see how much room there was.

I'm just not sure if there is an effective way to block it off, she can move the blanket and we can't push the couch up closer to the wall because there's an outlet there that we have stuff plugged into. I'd move the stuff but we don't have many outlets here and it's also were the phone jack is.

I would be nervous as most pull out couches have joints that could pinch / cut / break and do serious damage to kitty's apendages should they be in the wrong place at the wrong time (( when opening or sitting on couch )). I would probably try to find a way to prevent kitty from doing this.

I absolutely refuse to let my cats go under pullout couches. I lost a guinea pig to the inner workings of a LaZboy when I was a kid, and have been obsessed with having no animal in an area with moving parts like that.

Tails got into the back of our old pull out couch when he was 8 or 9 weeks, so I plugged the entrances with pillows. Even someone sitting hard on the couch has the potential to shift the mechanics inside and could seriously harm or kill if it hits your cat the wrong way.

Thanks for the input, I was actually sitting on it when she went in, lol.

She tried to go in once more, actually got between the couch and the wall and it was not so much fun pulling her out. She was all poofed up when I got her to the top - not a happy camper.

I think we have some extra pillows in the closet in the studio, I'll have to check and see.

I've always been paranoid about one of our cats getting under/in our LaZyboy recliner when it is reclined. My husband finally decided to humor me, and never reclines it. A cat could get under it in a heartbeat. Anything with metal moving parts just seems like an accident waiting to happen. Yes, block off entrance to the couch. I'm going to show my hubby this thread, for reinforcement.

So far the blanket is working. I can't get into the closet in the studio until tomorrow - Mike has a bunch of stuff piled in front of it that I don't want to touch/break and he has a client over right now anyways so I can't go in and bug him to move stuff just so I can get some pillows out. Who has clients over at 12:30 am anyways?! lol, weird musicians... It's a person that we know, but someone that we still have to be professional with, unfortunately, lol. I wish it was just one of his friends.

Glad to hear you have figured out how to block the couch off for kitty safety
