I'm new here and I'm having issues with my cat, let me start from the beginning: I found Enzo in my neighborhood when he was about 8 weeks and took him in when none of the neighbors claimed him. He's now getting close to his 3rd birthday.
His only issue has always been that he had a tendency to over eat and then vomit. It would happen on and off but generally hasn't been as bad in the last year or so. We've moved twice and in this new apartment everything seemed fine. The vomiting stayed low, but he had a couple bad ones so my girlfriend decided to buy him hairball and "daily best" treats. We'd try to give him a treat in the morning and at night.
A week or two after she bought the treats, he began acting more anxious, especially in my room at night. I sleep with the door shut and I've always keep him inside since his litter box is in my bathroom. However, his new anxious howling would wake me up and so I simply started to leave the door cracked. This seemed to help.
A few days ago I came home to find that he had pooped on the couch. It was more than what I usually scoop out of his box. A few days go by and he seems to be normal. Then this morning, he was howling and running around the living room. I get up to see what's wrong when he takes a few laps, stops, looks at me and starts pooping on the floor.
I scoop his litter box every two or three days at the most and on both occasions, the box had been done within the previous day. He did use the box in between the two incidents, although judging from the amount, he's been trying to hold it.

Any ideas?

Hi,

First, if he's still getting the treats, stop them. Just go back to his old normal diet. My boy has a delicate tummy, and sometimes even the most innocuous treat will upset his tummy and, thus, poo.

Second, it's usually suggested that a litter box be scooped at least once, and preferably, twice a day. It could be that he simply doesn't find the box quite clean enough for him, and he's trying to tell you there's an issue. I would actually go out and get two new boxes and start over with new litter (perhaps Cat Attract litter in one box - that's designed for cats with box issues). Also, use an enzyme cleaner wherever he's had the accidents...it may smell clean to you, but like a litter box to him.

If this doesn't solve his issue immediately, I'd make an appointment with the vet. Often pooing outside the box is an indication of a physical problem, so you need to rule that out.

Good luck, I know it's disheartening - my boy has had box issues at times, and I've almost cried at times over it.

You might have to clean the litter box more often.

wouldn't use the box unless it was clean first. At least he let us know when the box needed to be cleaned. Luna and Midnight don't.

I had a cat who used to suffer from stress induced fecal incontinence, meaning, when she was really stressed out, she'd poop inappropriately. Other times, she NEVER missed the box to her dying day.

First off, take your kitty to the vet to rule out anything medical. Then, clean the areas where he's pooped with an enzymatic cleaner (Nature's Miracle). Get a feliway diffuser and run 24/7 to help reduce stress. Add a 2nd litter box to your home and start scooping twice daily.
