Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
After sleepless weeks (well - mostly sleepless) - and now that this little girl is growing LIKE A WEED - we've made the decision that we are going to have to adopt her out.

We've completely fallen in love her. She is the cutest thing and does the cutest things. I'm sure all kittens are like this... it's just we've never had a kitten. At least not one that acted like one. Lazlo and Shelly were kittens when we brought them inside... but they were already 10 - 12 weeks old, and they were feral. Tuxedo, actually, when we brought him inside, acted the most "kitten-ish" about it - and he was almost a year old!

Anyway... around 10:00pm every night MaeMae gets over-tired, and runs around like a maniac attacking everything. After she gets this out of her system, she hops onto the bed, trots up to the pillows and schnuzzles into someone's neck. It is just so sweet. Our gang loves brushes and pets, and Spooky's a lap cat (kind of) - but no one displays the happiness and love that little MaeMae does.

The entire gang plays with her now, and Tuxedo, Shelly and Laz will even initiate it if she doesn't! I think Tuxedo is really going to miss her, they play around the most.

We haven't heard back from Janice yet, but we're actively looking now. We've got pictures out there... and it's breaking my heart.

But we've got to do what's right for all of us in the long run, and it is so apparent this place is just too small for five. I know we said that at two, three and four... but this time it's just so apparent we are past "the limit."

Yes - everyone gets along now, and three of them love playing with her. But the incidents of fighting over who's where, who gets what, etc. are up a LOT. So while there's lots of fun and games (so to speak), there's also a lot of "HEY - I WANT TO LIE THERE" fights going on. And Spook and Tuxedo really go at it at night - almost every night. We frequently get woken up to cat "screaming" as they're locked in a brawl about something, and I or Gary has to hop out of bed and clap a couple times right near them to break it up.

(As I write, MaeMae keeps trying to touch Tuxedo on the neck or cheek without him being able to bite at her before she pulls her paw away. It is too funny!)

I can barely look at MaeMae these days without getting a big lump in my throat. (We half-heartedly decided Tuesday to do this, and firmed up the decision yesterday.) She looks at us with those cute little eyes and her pixie nose...

We've actually gotten the Adoption Agreement together, and have to go meet a potential new dad for her on Friday...

...and when she's not in "play mode," you just touch her and she starts up the biggest purr I've heard (next to that of Tuxedo).

If only we lived in a bigger place! If only we could stetch this damn thing 10 more feet! If only we could add a slide-out or two to THIS home! If only we could afford a new one! IF ONLY IF ONLY IF ONLY!

I am sick over this. She's got the warmest little feet! And I HATE the thought of either falling asleep or waking up that first day without her here... this place is going to seem so empty!!!!

God this is hard!

Oh Laurie, you almost put me in tears! She's such a special little girl, but you are right...you have to do what's right for your whole household and what's best for Mae.

I'm sure she will miss you lots and lots too.

ISN'T THERE ANY OTHER WAY????? AAARRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Heidi - thanks so much for the hugs. I could barely bring myself to post this thread. Somehow it makes it more real and that just sucks. The best thing to do is distract myself... Gary's running errands, so it's the perfect time to blow of work run them all into the bedroom and get a quick vaccuum in.....

Laurie,

So sorry to hear that you have adopt Mae Mae out. She sounds like a real gem, but it must be awfully crowded in your small abode. I will pray that you find just the right home for her and that it will not hurt so much because you will be so happy with her situation that it will take some of the sting away. She will make someone a great little fur baby. Let us know how it goes.

Oh Laurie, I'm so sorry! I know this has been a difficult decision but it is for the best. Perhaps you can arrange for visits with MaeMae if she's adopted out near you?

In the meantime, many (((((hugs))))) for you!

I know how it feels hun. The hardest thing I ever had to do was get on that bus, and leave my 3 baby boys on a farm. You'll learn to live with it, but in the mean time, here's something that might cheer you up...

I am lyin' in my bed
Hear the clock tick and think of you
Caught up in circles
Confusion, there's nothing new...

Flashback, warm nights
Almost left behind....
Soon came some memories
Time after...

Sometimes you picture me
I'm walking too far ahead
Your calling to me,
I canot hear what you said...

Then you said, Go slow...
I fall behind...
The second hand unwinds,

If your lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time...
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting,
Time after time...

If your lost, you can look, and you will find me...
Time after time...
If you fall, I will catch you, I will be waiting
Time after time.

After my picture fades,
And darkness has turned to gray.
Watching through windows
You are wondering if I'm okay...

Secrets... stolen...
All from deep inside
The second hands on time...

If you are lost, you can look and you will find me...
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, Iall be waiting
Time after time

That's right
Mmm
Time after

Then you say, Go slow...
I fall behind...
The second hands on time...

If you are lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I will be waiting
Time after time

If youare lost, you can look and you will find me (One day will find me)
Time after time (Time after)
If you fall, I will catch you, Iall be waitina (I will be waiting)
Time after time

Time after time {Time after time}
Time after time {Time after time}
Time after time {Time after time}
Time after time {Time after time}

Time after time {Time after}
Time after time {Time after time}
Time after time {Time after time}
Time after time {Time after time}

{Time after time}
Time after time {Time after time}

Laurie, I'm so sorry you have to go through this! But I'm sure you're a good judge of character & will find her a wonderful home, where she'll get lots of love & attention and be spoiled just like she deserves.
Just keep in touch with the person you give her to - the updates you get will make you feel better, I'm sure.

That's so sad! But if it's the best thing for everyone involved then you do have to do it. I don't know if I'd ever be able to give up a kitty. I don't have mine at my house, but they're still mine and I know I'll get them back.

We can all understand why this is so hard for you. Even though you haven't had her that long, she's already your little baby! I hope someone you know will adopt her so you can watch her grow.

Laurie, you are doing such an amazing job with these cats! I always admire your ability to adapt your life to the little beasts. And what struck me here is, you are basing decisions on absolutely the best choice for the cats, not for you! That is so hard, to be clear headed in emotionally charged decisions. And you have done the right thing for the cats each time you are faced with these sorts of decisions. That takes a lot of strength.

Great work, you have done so much for little Mae, she will be an absolutely wonderful addition to someone else's life!

Oh God - you guys are so sweet. What would I do without this place? I'm all in tears again. Thank you so, so much for the wonderful thoughts and words. It means so much to me!!!!!

We were going to meet a potential new dad for MaeMae this morning, but it became apparent last night we'd have to much work to get out this morning before we have to leave for the airport to pick up Gary's mom... she's descending upon us for a week or so. We'll go meet MaeMae's potential new dad next week. He's 21, lives with his parents - and they're away for the weekend and we want to meet all of them.

I don't know how I feel about placing her in a home with no other cats at this point. I caught Spooky giving her a bath this morning!!!!!

We've expressed our reservations about this to him, so he's prepared for our not giving her up to him. But they LOVED the adoption agreement we have (and it's got a lot of DON'Ts in it!!!!!) so that's cool! But she's here with us for the weekend, and I'm OK with that!!!!

I know how much your heart must be breaking right now. It tore me up to give Caruso to his new person, and he never lived inside with us. So I can only imagine how horrible it is for you two to have to give up MaeMae since she has been with you 24 hours a day for all of these weeks now.

I pray that MaeMae's new family is as wonderful as Caruso's turned out to be. Make sure that the new person agrees to let you stay in touch so you will always know how this sweet baby is doing.

Awww I'm sorry you have to give Mae Mae up. You are much stronger then I am. Maybe she can go to someone you know? Then you could at least watch her grow up! Anyway, sounds like you gave it a lot of thought and are doing the right thing.
