We adopted a 2 month old kitten from the humane society on Saturday, everything is going great other than she wont use the litter box. Every time she has an accident I pick it up and take her and it to the litter box and show her that is where it goes. The second time i did that she also went pee. It looked like just a tiny spot, but I just figured that most of it must have went deeper into the litter. Well today she went pee on the carpet, I went to clean it up after rushing her to the litter box and once again it was only a tiny spot. By tiny I mean smaller than a dime. I do have her an appointment with a vet tomorrow, but I am just wanting any advice on what it could be, and maybe what to expect with the vet.

It has been almost 7 years since I had a cat and have never had one that wouldn't use the litter box and didn't pee much.

She drinks plenty of water so I don't know what could be wrong.

Also she was fixed the day before we adopted her. Could that be why she isn't peeing very much?

She is just a tiny baby. Her bladder isn't very big yet. Does she seem to pee more often than normal? Definitely bring it up to the vet, but I'm guessing it's just because she's so young.

Does she poop outside the box or just pee? If she only pees outside the box, it could be a bladder infection. If she does both out of the box, I'm thinking she's just not litterbox trained yet.

To train her to use a litterbox, she needs to be confined to a small area with no other options except the litterbox when you can't watch her. If she has full run of the house, she may never get the point. Kitten Attract litter (sold at Petsmart) is also very useful.

She doesn't pee that often. I spend the whole day with her. She wont let me out of her sight so I know every time she eats, drinks, and goes potty. Anytime i do leave the house she is placed in the bathroom with her litter box. I do understand her not having a very big bladder, only peeing a spot that is a lot smaller than a dime just doesn't seem right to me.

It's good that you are bringing her to the vet. Make sure you tell them, just incase she does have something wrong.

Vet said she was healthy. After 3 days she now uses the litter box for all her potty needs.

Kittens can easily get lost in the big house (and anything is big to them!) and forget where the litter box is.

Good to hear she is doing well now. This is why I recommend people taking home a new kitten to keep it in a small, preferably tiled room for a few days.

Soemthing else you might want to consider is getting some of the disposable aluminum cake pans and using them for litter boxes and placing them in her most visited rooms in the house. Young kittens are a lot like kids, when they gotta go, they gotta go NOW! That way, she won't have far to run to the potty.
