Giving cats pills is one of the hardest things you can do. Most cats have pretty sensitive noses and can smell just a little bit of crushed pill from across the room. I can't get any of my cats to eat their food when there is some meds mixed in it.
Your cat does need to eat the whole pill for it to be successful. The best way is really to just shove it down their throat if you can. If you can't I'd recommend that you buy a topical tape wormer called Profender. One dose is about $10 but it may be your only option. I would wait a few days before you give your cat anything again though.

I gotta pill Parker every day...I wasn't sure how to do it but I found this video and it was pretty helpful. Offers tips and shows how to actually give it to them whole. My cat doesn't seem to mind much, so I did what they showed and it worked perfectly.

Hope this helps!

If you give your kitten a whole pill, be sure and have a syringe nearby with water in it and follow the pill up by carefully dropping drips of water down kitty's throat so the pill won't stick. You don't want to flood the throat with water- that can cause huge issues, but you want to be sure the pill goes down.

Drontal is poison and tastes as such- it is nasty and makes kitties drool. But it does the trick and kills the worms. I use spray cheese, just cover the pill in the cheese and slide it down kitty's throat then follow up with water. Some people have luck with pill pockets. Not here in this house though.

When it comes to giving cats a pill, we don't have luck either. Luna's good, she doesn't fight us. But you couldn't trick Lynxx and Midnight. They knew if a pill was hidden in their food, and refuse to eat. Or they eat everything in the dish, and leave the pill. We had no luck with the pill gun either. Lynxx would spit it out, and foam at the mouth. Midnight will spit the pill out aiming for our face. Those 2 always make us take them to the vet, even the vet techs have to fight with Midnight. Yet they'll happily eat our pills if they fall to the floor.

Thanks so much! I figured I posted way too late (1am) to get help by morning.

I tried the video method w some meds in the food... not happening.

At this point ill have to start over w the liquid meds suggested. I take my dog to the vet next week... will ask then.

Thanks again!!!

Probably the hardest thing to do with a cat. They are smart too and may spit it later if you do manage to get it in their mouth or trick them into eating it. My Ricky has been on meds for the past 2 weeks and yesterday he spit his Antibiotic pill out three times. He knows when I have a pill ready to give him and he cringes and freezes up. I have to sit behind him lift his head up and throw the pill in and message his throat and neck which causes him to swallow. 99% of the time this works but as time goes on he gets smarter at resisting. Thank goodness I only have one more pill to give him today. I don't know what people do when they have to fight this battle everyday.

If I have to pill a cat, I always use a pill syringe, I got one with some Drontal once. It holds the pill in little pincers at the end and then the plunger pushes it out. it's very narrow so it's not too hard to get it pretty far back in the cat's throat. of course some cats are better at it than others.

I have also on occasion crushed a pill and mixed it with water and put it into a regular syringe. But some cats are good at spitting liquid out so try to get a sense of what your cat will put up with. But ultimately for something like Drontal, which you won't have to give often, the pill method is probably best. Hiding it in food is only for cats who will eat anything!

Have you tried Pill Pockets? They are an absolute GODSEND to us. All the cats get one, I just make sure Mickey gets the one with the pill inside. So nobody gets particularly suspicious.

I have a cat pill plunger and it works quite well. If you think you didn't get the whole drontal pill, then you can get Profender (from the vet). It is a spot on treatment and much eaiser than pilling. Cats are hard to pill using your fingers because your finger can get cut with their teeth and if you don't get the pill in correctly and quickly it can end up in their mouth and they will just spit it out. Crushing and putting in food usually doesn't work as they can detect it!!

Yes! Mickey got that spot-on Profender yesterday! I had never heard such a thing existed. How much easier on us all!

Profender is fairly new. You're right that it's a godsent when you have to treat for tapeworm. I'd rather spend the extra money that to go through the pilling dance with a feisty foster.

Just FYI, you don't need a prescription for Profender so you don't have to wait to get it from the vet. You can buy it online from several sites. I usually get it from Revivial Animal Health as I know they are a reputable company. Profender comes in three different sizes depending on your cat's weight so you have to know exactly how much your cat weighs.

THank YOU!!!! I will get profender instead!

I just discovered profender too - hurray, this will change my life!!!! Drontil must smell, cos my cats always know when I've hidden it. And if you don't get it down on the first attempt it foams up in their mouths.

Well now I've found a site with many replies stating their cats got very sick or died from this stuff. I saw NO complaints on this site though. Sonow I'm confused on what to do....
