Cosequin contraindication?

A while back in a discussion I have this vague memory of someone mentioning a possible situation in which cosequin should not be used in a cat.

Side effects are very rare in cosequin use, but there was this one mention...

....I don't remember what it was or who said it. So I'm looking for any possible scenario where cosequin might not be safe to use in a cat.

Anyone?

Thank you, that is very helpful. The first link I had already read, but the others did give some interesting insight.

I have used cosequin for arthritis with my Ootay
Her initial improvement when she was started on it at 13 was quite dramatic. As she got older the arthritis did take over and the cosequin was no longer enough. By the time she was 17 she was experiencing quite a bit of arthritis pain, but it did help her for many years.

Mazy cat takes it daily to help with her FLUTD.

My vet and I are talking about starting Tolly on it, as he is beginning to show some stiffness when jumping, but seeing that it may thin the blood makes me think we should wait until after his dental, in case he needs any extractions.

I've emailed Nutramax, asking if there are any contraindications between cosequin and phenobarbital, I have not been able to find any myself, but I want to be sure.

I've never used either, so I don't know if they can be used together. I did try a Yahoo search for you. But nothing came up, other then just purchasing both of them. I hope Nutramax get's back to you soon.

Heard from them yesterday:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Cosequin has no known side effects or contraindications with any other
medications or supplements that your pet may be taking.

If you have any questions, please contact Customer Service at
1-888-886-6442. We are available Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm
EST.
I'm going to hold off until after Tolly's dental, in case he needs any extractions, only becasue one of those links you posted metioned that cosequin may cause some blood thinning and should be stopped a couple weeks prior to any surgery.

Vet thinks probably no extractions will be neccessary but admits it's difficult to know for sure what's under the tartar. He's not having any signs of FORL, thankfully, but she of course will check for that too, while he's under. Tolly doesn't have many teeth left because of prior problems with the resorptive lesions.

Go to your local pharmacy and ask the pharmacist. While that will be information on humans, chances are if there's a big problem in humans it's not safe to combine in pets, either.

That's a good idea to wait for Tolly's dental to be over, before starting those meds. Just incase.

What a great idea, thank you! I'll be picking up Tolly's refill next week, a perfect time to ask. (I get his meds at the same pharmacy I get my meds)

otto, just an FYI, Hyaluronic Acid has made an amazing difference for Gracie... She is now jumping everywhere, grooming herself, way more flexible... In not long at all... definitely a noticeable difference... I am using that brand that Sharky recommended, but I buy the medium dog's one to save $$$. Here you go: http://www.trixsyn.com/

Thank you Carolina. I remember that discussion and bookmarked the page at the time, but I am not going to be using anything not tried and true on Tolly. As the younger cats age and begin to need help with arthritis I will be more willing to try for them. By then it will have been around longer, plus they don't have the special needs that Tolly does.

I am really glad it is helping Gracie though. It's good to know there is something out there that may be better than cosequin ....

BUT: I disagree with the website that cosequin is no more effective than a sugar pill and think it is wrong of them to have that on there, and makes me even less willing to try it. I don't like that type of selling angle, bashing one thing to make something else look good.

Ootay
had very dramatic improvement when started on cosequin and it helped her for many years. Eventually the arthritis did go beyond what cosequin could do. At the time my vet and I discussed adequan injections but back then the injections were intramuscular and very painful and I did not want to put Ootay through that.

Now adequan is a subq injection, and in fact I could do them at home, so it's something that I keep in mind for when my cats begin to age. But now also, there is laser therapy, and I like that idea best of all. That's for severe arthritis pain of course, but I sure wish it had been available when Ootay was still here.

Realize the stuff Carolina is talking about is the ONLY joint supplement that thru actual testing is found in the joints
.... It is HIGHLY tested on animals of all kind s including humans( though the name of product changes)

To date there are no definitive studies on cosequin saying it does work, obviously it does in a good number of those trying it ...the "bashing" is actually more clinical to clinical value as most who do studies and work in animal drug "designing" dont think much of it
