I like the careful circumventing of the synonym for rooster in this headline

I saw this story at the blog Boing Boing first, they seemed to be running it to get puns in the comment section.

I'm a little confused. I'm not an expert on cockfighting, but I thought they went at it mano y mano, er... talon y talon, not with knives strapped on. Also, how does someone die from a calf spike, unless it hit the femoral?

They use razors or sharp knives on the birds, very very sharp blades. They shave down the bird's natural spur and attach the fake ones. They would be deep enough to cut the fermoral and make you bleed out.

Good for the bird, though sad since all the birds will have to be euthanized.

Why, in this day and age 2011 is "cockfighting" still legal???!! For what purpose could possibly this be still allowed??

How INHUMANE for not only the animals, but for the participants, what a backwards mentality, same as dogfighting, I can not even speculate. Horrific, that's what involved with the whole mentality of "blood sports" for both non-humans and humans alike.

Sick, and for those who trash the HSUS http://www.humanesociety.org/ and the ASPCA http://aspca.org/ and yes, even the villified around here PETA http://www.peta.org/issues/default.aspx, these 3 aformentioned organizations want to stop all this needless/senseless animal abuse..check them out and read ...they have been trying to stop this type and kind of abuse for years now..

It's very hard to understand or even change a "tradition". In the Philippines (and other Spanish colonized countries) cockfighting is part of the culture. I do believe that education can change the attitude of the next generation but in the meantime while the old folks are still around, it's very, very hard.

That's barbaric putting blades on them like that! As for the person who was killed, you reap what you sow!!

If there was a "like" button on here, I'd click it.

I don't think you will find anyone here who disagrees with their work to stop animal cruely, neglect, or the exploitation of animals. It's when they get into equal rights for animals that many disagree with. Equal rights would mean that no one could have pets because an animal cannot be owned under any circumstances.
