Hi there
new to this site and to cats My partner says that cats defend their own territory and so therefore we shouldn't have cat business in our garden. We have lived here nearly six months and have 2 cats a 12 year old ginger tom and a kitten. We still have cat business in our little garden at the back of the yard I am convinced the kitten in doing its business in the yard I've caught him at it once. the older cat has always done his business else where which is why I think its the kitten. What can i do to train him to do it somewhere else.

Are these your own cats, or a neighbor's?

If they're yours, it's going to be impossible to keep them out of the garden...and why would you want to? It's their home, too. The alternative would be to keep them indoors and supply them a nice clean litterbox.

If they belong to a neighbor, the best you could hope for would be to put out something that repels the cats. Some say mothballs work, but keep in mind they won't last very long outdoors, and they ARE poisonous if ingested.

Get some sand and fill a small pit,a child's sand box or a baby's wading pool with it to make an outdoor litter box for the cats. You can also use potting soil, wood chips or a mixture thereof. Plant some basil in the kitten's current favorite spot, or some "piss-off plants" (actual name), though the latter stink.
If other cats come into your garden, you can't stop yours from marking it as their territory. Encouraging your cats to do their business elsewhere is just going to get you some angry neighbors.

Yes, really. If they are your cats you should not encourage them to use someone else's property. I liked the idea of an outdoor litterbox, away from the house I would guess. Are the indoor-outdoor, and do they have a litterbox to use?

My neighbors have three cats that frequently use my front yard and the front flower bed. I shoo the out of the yard when I catch the at it, but won't do anything to harm them. Other people may not be so tolerant and one day I'll snap too and return every piece of feces in my yard to the neighbors…

I had a small garden in my backyard last year, I have two outside cats that I keep back there. They didn't poop in the garden because I laid down some old lattice (planted through it) and some spare garden wire. The wire I bent down a couple of inches on all sides then laid it down to create a box over what I planted. My cats could walk over/though the wire but it was difficult, squatting was nearly impossible. I intend to fully redo the front bed this year and cover it in wire to see if it stops more persistant cats.

You want your cats to use your neighbor's gardens?

I'm a little confused. Are other cats doing their business in your yard, and its upsetting your kitties who view that as their territory?

If so, the cats in my neighborhood stress my two out as well when in my yard, and I just chase em off. Loud noises is usually all it takes to send em running. If you wanted to be extra mean you could sneak over with a squirt gun.

If your own cats are doing their business in your yard, sounds like the right place for kitties to go if they are outdoor cats. Better than over at your neighbor's house!

UH no offense, but you certainly don't want your cats using the neighbors property for their business, and that's where they will go if you scare them off. Just build an outdoor litter box. You can even start it up with soil, and add Cat Attract litter to it as well.
