my tomcat pees on his foot

I had my tomcat neutered yesterday. He is about one and a half years old. His urine smells super bad and I'm hoping the smell will soon fade. The big problem is when he uses the litter boxes he pees all over his back leg. Then he walks all over my small home and spreads his stinky pee all over the rug. I'm not sure if he pees on his foot because he is a large cat and doesn't feel he has enough room in the litterbox or if he's just clumsy. The litterbox is the biggest I could find. He is also long hair. Any thoughts?

Did you just bring him in post neutering? If he was an outdoor cat before without ever used a litter box then it stands to reason that he may not be used to it yet.

If he truly is a large cat go get him a plastic storage bin. You can get very large ones that are meant to fit under a bed.

What sort of litter are you using and how deep?

Also have you heard him peeing at all? Do you know if he's having a normal stream or if it's weakly dribbling out? The latter can suggest a urinary problem and would be worth a trip back to the vet.

he's indoor outdoor and he is litterbox trained. his pee stream is also regular. i just don't understand why he doesn't groom his foot. he pees on it and then leaves it dirty. he's had this problem since before he was fixed and i thought it was because un neutered males don't groom themselves much.

Neutering doesn't make a difference in grooming, a cat's particular habits are his own. Sorry to say, your kitty may not be as fastidious as others are. That or he would rather you wipe the icky stuff off his foot...

Try the storage bin for a litter box and see if this helps a bit. You didn't answer what type of litter you used. Some cats sink into soft scoopable litters making their stance in the litter box be a bit off, gravity does the rest and if the leg happens to be in the way well..

I keep a small indoor-type door mat - rubber backing, sort of knit / hooked rug appearance on top - right where the cats have to step getting into or out of the litter box. It catches most of the litter they would otherwise track around.

Watch him next time to see whats going on if you can. Both my male and female do super wide spread feet while crouching down, so if your big kitty feels there isn't room, as was mentioned the storage bins are an option.

However, I'd recommend actually going to lowes and looking for where they have mortar bins. In both the Lowes here at least, right next to them they have the general mixing tubs made of strong plastic. These are very large and have a good wall height to size ratio for litterbox use and are economical.

They look similar to this:

Failing that, rather than use an underbed one which usually have wheels and thus not a smooth bottom or just don't have tall enough walls, you can get a regular large tall storage box and simply make a cutout in the front for them to step in and out of.

Most litterboxes, especially covered ones, are pretty dang small. Its definitely not normal, as a cat that pees on himself is a cat that is likely to get hunted down by predators in the wild.
