I am still just numb. I took Blue in for his senior cat blood work today to re-check his thyroid issues. He has a place on his neck that has been there for over a year and it itches him off and on. Today it was itching him and I remembered to ask the vet to look at it (I tend to forget it is there and it is just skin colored when he isn't scratching it). Well, my vet did a shave and it has mass cells. It is cancer. I guess that explains the weakened immune system, losing weight despite the methimazole, and such.

So...the "plan" is to get all the blood work back and if nothing is completely off the charts bad, Dr. wants to remove the skin cancers. First, though, he is going to do x-rays to make sure it hasn't spread. I just PRAY it hasn't.

It has been a rough month with regard to cats.
Like I said, I am just...numb.

Oh, my - you have had a terrible month - but let's hope for the best. I will keep you in my prayers - I can only try to imagine how you're feeling, but remember everyone here will try to understand what you're going through, and will send prayers and vibes for Blue's health. Please share whatever you want to, and know that you have friends here.

Thank you all. I have gone from hugging him and just crying to feeling like i have been hit by a truck. My husband wants to know how common it is for 2 cats in the same household to turn up with cancer - do we live in a house full of carcinogens? But at the ages my cats were when the got the cancers, I would say it wasn't unusual...just sucky!

I will update more as I find out more. We are waiting on the blood results first and they should start coming in tomorrow. The vet said I likely would not hear from him in those until Monday or Tuesday. And all x-rays will be done before any surgery for Blue. I am very thankful that he does that - they almost cut Sissy open to remove her cancer (they thought it might just be in her abdomen somewhere) but luckily did an ultrasound first and realized it was in her stomach. If they had opened her, it would have been for naught - as the cancer in her stomach was inoperable. I am thankful she didn't have to recover from surgery while dying from cancer.

I pray with all my might that Blue's is treatable and hasn't spread!

sound like Blue is in good & caring hands with your vet. I'm sorry you have to wait so long for the results. Not knowing is terrible.

This is really upsetting. You've been through too much.

I know of people with skin cancer growths. They have them removed, repeatedly, and have lived for years with this condition.

My neighbor across the street has a dog with the same problem. They have to remove them repeatedly, too.

But the cancer hasn't spread internally in any of these cases. So, we can hope and pray that it is the same for Blue.

Rebecca, I'm so sorry to hear this! You've certainly had a rough go of it with the kitties lately. I really hope the prognosis is better than you hope.

Oh no. I'm so sorry to hear this. All paws crossed here that it can be removed and has not spread. Ootay
had a lymphoma removed from her hip when she was 13. The vet got it all, it never returned and she had five more happy years.

I've lost 2 of mine to cancer in the last few months. They were old and yes, it's just sucky. Don't beat yourself up on this as if you contributed to it. Talk to your vet about treatments and the prognosis from those treatments before you make any decisions going forward. Sometimes it's just 1 day at a time.

I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and sending major healthy vibes your way.

Thank you. I am very hopeful this weekend that Blue's cancers can be removed. I made him some chicken tonight and he gobbled it up like mad. That was WONDERFUL! I am going to start feeding him boiled chicken and white rice and see if I can help him with his eating some as well as the loose stools. We raise our own chicken, so the chicken is free of any hormones and it is grain fed, free range chicken.
