So I am having a slight problem. About a week or two ago I accidentally slammed my front door on my cats tail about halfway down. My cat is about 8 months old. He was bleeding minimally out of where the door caught him for a few days, so I washed the wound with a peroxide mixture, put some betadine on it and topped it off with a triple antibiotic ointment. There was the initial cut where the door hit his tail, but there was also a small red line going to almost the end of his tail (this was also treated). Now my problem is that he is losing fur along this line, but nowhere else on his tail. The fur seems to have small bits of dead skin on the ends. Will this fur grow back? He is able to move all of his tail with ease and he is active and acting normal so I don't think he is hurting at all. There seems to be proper scabbing on the wound, and he is not sensitive on his tail at all that I have noticed.
I haven't taken him to the vet due to lack of funds. If anyone could shed (no pun intended) some light on this predicament it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Your cat must go to the vet ASAP. There's no telling how much damage you did to the blood supply, nerves, and joints. There is no home remedy or fix for this significant injury other than a vet. Depending on how badly the tail was injured it may even need amputation.

I agree...a vet visit sounds rather urgent. There may be some extensive damage. Hoping for better news about this. Take care,

The cat needs to see a vet. This does not sound like a normal injury. The fact that skin is dying is a bad sign. It can spread and cause major problems, possibly even including death if infection spreads. This is not something you should treat at home.

If you have decent credit you can apply for CareCredit to pay for the vet visit. Many vets accept it. You can apply online to see if you qualify. If that's not an option I'd see about borrowing some money and find a low cost vet. I wouldn't wait longer than until tomorrow though. Call local Humane Society to see if they know of a low cost vet that can help you.
This place has a coupon for a $25 exam on their website. It has expired but if you ask them they may still be willing to honor it. It is still posted on their website after all. http://www.christownanimalhospital.com/. At the very least the cat should be examined and at that point the vet can give you an idea of how much treatment will cost.
This place also seems to offer low cost vet care: http://www.vanakenpet.com/

Good luck with your kitty. Please let us know how it goes.

Adding my vote. Please take your cat to the vet for proper treatment. The longer you delay the bigger the problem and the more expensive it is going to be.

edit <oh dear, I just realized this thread is almost 2 weeks old. Hopefully that poor cat has received medical treatment by now ...sigh...>

I'd get to the vet asap. My parents cat had a similar injury where the tip of the tail got caught in a door and it removed a bit of skin and fur. The vet had to amputate about an inch of tail to prevent infection.
