Does anyone know how to unlock an iphone and make it useable with a carrier different from AT&T?
I know it's possible, but I don't know how to go about it- I want to get it done by someone trustworthy, I don't want to attempt doing it myself.
Are there any places that do this for a fee???

Not sure what carrier you are trying to unlock it for, but iphone4 will be available through Verizon on 2/10 - only a few days away. In fact, you can pre-order it now online.

I'm trying to use it for T-mobile. I already have an iphone 3gs, and I got it from a friend who upgraded to iphone 4 and sold their old one to me....

Can you phone the company your friend was with to get it unlocked? That's how it's done here, usually involving a $20-$50 fee

It's definitely possible. I used to work for T-Mo, and we'd get iPhone calls occasionally. You need to unlock the phone. You can do it yourself with downloadable software, or pay someone to do it for you and set up the phone. If you go the self-help route, T-Mobile will help you set up the data settings.

Check here: http://www.howardforums.com/forumdis...63-Marketplace

Keep in mind that the iPhone will NOT work on T-Mobile's high speed network. Even the iPhone 4 will use slower EDGE speeds. This is because T-Mobile and AT&T's high speed networks use different bands. AT&T uses 1900 MHz, T-Mobile uses 1700 MHz.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
Normally you need the code from At&T to unlock the phone and the code can only be obtained by the person who had the phone and they need to have an account open for atleast 6 mths and in good standing for it to be unlocked. The only reason I know this is because I got a Pantech Duo and with it unlocked was able to use it with Immix wireless. The only bad thing was that after I got it unlocked the phone went wonky, it wouldnt answer phone calls I never had any sound..basically the phone died so I still ended up using the POS flip phone I got free from Immix.

Id be careful though because unlocking phones can sometimes cause them to lock up and depending on the 'rules' from the initial purchase contract it may void the warrenty to get the phone replaced or fixed.

Did you ever get it unlocked? I have an iPhone that I want to unlock to use with T-Mobile as well.

When the original iPhone came out and wasn't yet available in Canada, many of my friends has unlocked ones they bought from the US. My dad has an iPhone that he bought off eBay that's unlocked, but I don't know what version it is.

I would go through someone to have it unlocked, personally. Those people know how to do it while minimizing the risks of something going wrong, they do it all day long. Usually if something happens, they also know how to fix it.

Around here they're the non-chain stores that sell for the major carriers (Rogers, Bell, Telus, etc), as well as some variety stores and pawn shops.

I'm sure there are other places that do it as well, but those are just the ones that I've noticed.

It may be a moot point since AT&T is trying to merge with T-Mobile. I have four months left on my contract with T-Mobile and I want to use my iPhone.

I tried jailbreaking my phone (I don't care about the warranty) and I lost the OS. I got a new SIM card from a friend and it is up other than allowing me access to T-Mobile.

When I contracted with T-Mobile, I was assured by them that I could get my $300.00 phone to work with them. Well, I can't.

I gave it to a friend to do it for me about 3 weeks ago, but he just got around to doing it and I'm supposed to get it back sometime this week...
I'll let you know how it goes, and if it works. AT&T bought T- mobile, but from what I've heard T-mobile will still exist on its own, it will just be owned by the same people as AT&T and the iphone will still not be available to T-mobile customers (which sux majorly
)

Yeah, let me know if you are able to sync it with I-tunes. Someone told me if it is flashed you can't. Of course, they worked for Verizon
.

I don't think the deal has gone through with AT&T buying T-Mobile yet.

I got my iPhone unlocked! And you were right, you can't sync it with iTunes after having it unlocked because if you sync it it will go back to the original setting, it won't be unlocked anymore, but there is another way to put your music on it, and you can still download all the apps you want from the app store...
