Hi all...

My cat Mike was diagnosed recently with what the vet described as "kitty Parkinson's". I am somewhat acquainted with Parkinson's in humans, having worked in a nursing home, but am somewhat at a loss to know what to expect with Mike.

A few years ago he started walking a little funny. Then came mild tremors. His hindquarters are most severely affected in that his back half will sometimes fall over when he walks. He can no longer run, and lost his tail a year and a half ago to a raccoon attack. He can still jump up onto my recliner, enabling him to climb onto my bed, but he can't jump onto the bed from the floor. He leaves the bed by the same route, but when he jumps to the floor from the chair he sometimes tumbles.

He is between 10 and 15 years old; having adopted him as a stray some eight years ago I really don't know, and he isn't telling. I carry him up and down the stairs as it is too painful for me to watch him laboriously climb up or tumble down; in short, I am spoiling him absolutely rotten. He can still feed himself and climb in and out of the litter box, though I will soon have to get one with lower sides.

My question is about the progression of the disease, and at what point will I have to put him down. He seems otherwise perfectly healthy and could live for many years. Does anyone here have experience with this?

(In the last 11 years I have lost one cat to kidney disease, one cat to liver cancer, plus two cats and a parent to old age.)

Thanks,

Fred Latchaw

He did no tests, apart from observation. If I remember correctly, he told me there wasn't any treatment, the cat wasn't in any pain or distress, and whenever he fell down it would only be a few inches so he wasn't likely to hurt himself.

I'm not terribly concerned with pinpointing exactly what he has; it has been progressing for 3-4 years now, and I'm wondering how his condition will deteriorate further. I love him dearly, but I don't see keeping him around if he needs to be carried to the litter box.

I don't have any experience with Parkinson's in cats. I just wanted to tell you that I'm sorry that Mike has it. I'm sorry for your other loss of your other cats, and your parent as well.

I noticed you placed 2 links on this thread. They are no longer valid. I came across this thread because I have a cat that is exhibiting the same symptoms and has been for some time. Recently though, she is getting worse. She has pooped on a rug in the laundry room for some time now as she cannot poop in the litter box without falling (and she hates falling in the litter). However, has now started peeing elsewhere which is a much bigger problem. She's only 11 and we love her. We haven't taken her to the vet for some time as the costs of the tests they wanted to run were prohibitive; plus anything I'd seen online has said there was no pain associated with this, so we opted to leave her illness a mystery. But with this new development, we'll either have to treat her or put her down... just wanting to find 'good' information online to help us make that decision. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, rawcreativity !

Now, about those links.......

For the first one, If you use the search feature on the page that does come up there, you'll find this other piece: http://www.paws-and-effect.com/whats-wrong-with-my-wobbly-kitten/   (which also references the article that Natalie_ca provided)  That original article is archived here: http://web.archive.org/web/20120418...008/05/25/does-my-cat-have-parkinsons-disease

As for the Science Daily link.....that one worked for me (although it is quite dated, from 2006)

I think you'd fare much better if you were to start a new thread about your cat's condition...all of those references are quite out-of-date.

As for the cost of care, there could be suggestions available for you if you were to post (even) your general location.

There is no treatment for their condition. In Mike's case, he's also pretty old, and he's lost half his body weight in the past 6-12 months. He is definitely a candidate for euthanasia, though neither of us are ready for that just yet. As long as he can stand to eat, and make his needs known, I'm keeping him with me. In your case, if she's only 11, they may well try to rescue her as she could live for years yet. But it won't hurt to ask. Good luck.
