We ended up with about 4" of the white stuff on top of our 3" of ice. The sun did come out today and started melting everything, but it will freeze again tonight.

Obviously, some of my neighbors didn't get the memo that trash pick up had been canceled for the week!

Beautiful pic though Stephanie! Is this a record for Dallas/Ft. Worth?

I WISH I had been able to capture a picture of what's gone on here. It's really amazing. We had the blizzard at the beginning of January that piled up basically a couple of feet of snow, an ice storm the following week, then another 6 or so inches of snow (though it had melted/condensed down a bit from the first storm) - and then this ice storm (it came with only a couple of inches of snow). I think there might have been another snow accumulation in there somewhere... but we've got a "layer cake" that's stacking up.

BUT the topper was the last ice storm. EVERYTHING was absolutely ensconsed in ice - I don't know how much, but definitely several inches of it. And then the wind came. It was like a hail storm on steroids.
When I put out the evening meal for the cats, I was PELTED with ice. I was hoping the cats stayed wherever they were, quite frankly, because for small animals it was really dangerous.
Yesterday morning (and this morning as nothing changed LOL) it looked like someone had smashed glass EVERYWHERE. Chunks of ice on top of the ice-encrusted snow. Everything is absolutely frozen in place. There is NO WAY to move this stuff. We broke our two shovels trying to smash them through the "ice" topping on everything. The snow/ice from the latest storm piled up to the bottom of our step - so no great shakes - but it is unmoveable. The road (in the park) is an ice-skating rink - as is pretty much everything around us.

AND we're expecting another ice storm tomorrow!

No snow record. We got about 5 inches, but that's nowhere near a record. We got 11 inches in one storm last year, and I think that WAS a record.

On average, we have about 6 inches of snow and 2-3 "ice events" every year, so we're not in line for much more.

We didn't even get down to the record temp they predicted the night before last, which was 9 degrees. Fourteen was the record, but we only got down to about 15.

This a.m. I walked down our long condo sidewalk toward the street; decided to walk on the snow instead because of the frozen sidewalks. Bad idea. The snow has frozen so solid I began to slip & slide & ended up on my knees. No injury, just at my age wondering if I was going to get up or crawl over to a lamppost or tree. Not too close to either. Managed to get up, only pride hurt.

We are supposed to get more tomorrow I think. I've actually given up watching the weather reports. So many around here still don't have power. We are lucky!

Hey, that makes a good name for a cat!

I thought snow down that way was rare, actually.

Last year, we got something like 11" or 14" or something like that in a 24 hour period. That WAS a record for amount of snow in a 24 hr period. That was so fascinating!

We really don't get too much snow each year, about 1 good snow day a year, but it usually is gone in a day or so. This year, we had the ice on Tuesday without any warming above freezing and then snow last night. We finally saw the sun today and have started to thaw out. However, it's going to be really cold again tonight and all that stuff that's melted will re-freeze.

Actually in the panhandle, north Texas (the DFW and surrounding areas) and out in Big Bend, we do get snow. The thing is that it's usually here one day and gone the next. This isn't the case with this crud this week.

There's nowhere in Texas that doesn't get snow, occasionally. A couple of years ago they had what they called "The Christmas Miracle," and had heavy snow all the way down in the Valley.

We have 4 real seasons here. It's just that the cold one is fairly short.

Shudder, shudder, shudder. Ice is the worst! I'm so sorry!

The snow here melts in the sunshine, even though the temperatures are in the teens, then we have ice.

And when all this starts melting, besides fog, there will be lots and lots, days and days of ice.

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

It might not be a record, but things are much worst than last year IMHO. It started getting bad because it started with rain that quickly turned into ice overnight from Monday to Tuesday, and it still hasn't melted. Yes, it was 14F, but with the wind chill was 0F, and we did not get that cold last year... it was miserable.
Here in Highland Park it is a mess. I drove the day before yesterday to get some food at 7-11... BIG MISTAKE. My car was sliding all over the place - I might as well be ice skating. The car in front of me did a complete 360 and ended up on the other side of the road facing the traffic head on. I got on 7-11 and couldn't leave the parking lot - my car got stuck on the ice. Luckily some police officers were in there for coffee and pushed me out of there.
Here we get emails from the police force, and here is what I got today:
Blue Zone News - Snowy Friday, February 4, 2011 Update
* The Town is now blanketed by several inches of beautiful white snow. The ice patches that were visible the past few days are now hidden and are causing dangerous road conditions.
* Icicles quickly become torpedoes when the weather starts to warm up. Please knock them down where you see them forming, specifically above doorways and window ledges.

Road Updates
Wycliffe remains closed.
Westbound Armstrong from Lakeside is closed. Attempting to drive up the small hill on Armstrong by the fountain is almost impossible. We have witnessed a Ford F-250 spin sideways and retreat back down the hill.
Eastbound Beverly from Preston is a bit challenging because of the inclines before and after the bridge and the ice beneath that area.
Westbound Beverly from Oxford has icy patches and folks should be cautious approaching the Beverly Bridge.
[font=Century Gothic, Arial]Blue Zone News - Road Advisory

[font=Century Gothic, Arial]*According to the latest weather report, Dallas had approximately 5" of snow. With that being said, Highland Park DPS has been assisting multiple stranded motorist around HP. Please try to avoid driving, if possible. Wycliffe Ave is closed for now and sanding cannot commence until the precipitation stops.

[font=Century Gothic, Arial]Be careful and check on your elderly neighbors!

I think it is because we straight roads full of trees, creating shadows... Don't know, the fact is, the streets here are covered in ice. I hope it melts pretty soon, as I want to get out of the house! Today is Friday and it is the first day the mailman has come around since Monday, to give an idea...

Here is how my courtyard is looking, sort of cute in spite of the mess!

Depending on which news station I listen to, we had anywhere from 20-28 inches of snow---either one sets a new record for our area. At one point, we were getting an inch of snow in an hour. Luckily, it was the light, fluffy stuff. Using the snowblower was still a challenge.
Schools were cancelled for 4 days, no trash pickup, no mail or paper on Wed., and government offices were closed. We finally managed to clear enough snow in the alley to get out of the garage and to the grocery store on Thursday; I have never seen the shelves so empty!
I was worried about one feral in particular; I hadn't seen it since Monday evening. He/she lives under a neighbor's shed, and I'd shoveled out near the entrance it uses. I finally saw him sitting on my patio last night; poor little thing was so hungry I had to take food out twice. He/she was there again this morning, so I guess I can stop worrying now.

Now, just to keep it interesting, the forecast calls for snow Sunday and Monday.

It's snowing here again.
Just when the roads were cleared up and someone plowed our edition, it's all covered again.

I really just want to get out of this house. Going to work Thursday and Friday was nice, and we ran a couple of errands last night. I wish we had gone out to dinner though.

Lucky!!!! We were supposed to get about 1-2" of snow today and ended up with 3.5" with more expected tomorrow. That's on top of the snow and ice we got Tues. evening - Wed. last week.

There's no place like home
We hit 15 below zero the other night. About noon the next day, a water pipe burst in the wall between the kitchen (actually the floor under the kitchen) and the basement. Yes, it was an interior wall. Some idiots that worked on the house years ago capped off a water line and left it between the floors. It froze overnight then burst when the ice melted the next day. So my basement ceiling is completely trashed - water ran along all of the HVAC duct work between the floors then through the plaster.

I've got half of the ceiling in the basement torn down and fans on the carpet trying to dry it all out. Darn good thing the humidity is so low right now - I think we'll avoid the mold that usually comes after water damage.

We were so done with house remodeling for a while. Alas, we have another project that is going to take us a few months to restore the damage.

I want spring to arrive.
