Tiger who is an approximate 10 year old neutered male has thinning fur on his tail. Is this normal as cats age??? We believe him to be a maine coon mix and he always had that big fluffy tail. I would say that over the last few months his tail has shrunk. Its not as fluffy and full as it used to be. There are not any bald patches or irritation- just thinner, smaller tail. I thought maybe he was over grooming but he's not that I notice.

We are doing some renovations in the house but that was just started and I noticed the hair loss maybe 2 months now???? I don't think its getting worse but I'm keeping an eye on it.

When was his last senior blood work done? If before he started losing fur you need to get him in for that ASAP to see how his thyroid levels look.

had thinning fur on his lower back, and his tail. It happened twice. We did take him to the vet, but they didn't know whatit was. All the fur grew backonit's on after awhile. It could also be an allergy to something new in the house. You should take your cat to the vet so they can run tests.

Of course this had to happen at a really bad time (financially). I just spent a bundle getting another of my cats checked out to find out her issue was behavioral. So I really don't have the funds to go through that again to find out it's nothing medically wrong.
Hopefully in a month or two I can get caught up and then I'll bring him in for tests. I am going to obviously keep an eye on him and if anything changes/happens he will be taken in.....figure it out somehow.

Aside from the tail hair being thinner he is no different. I checked his skin over and couldn't find anything abnormal or red. His weight is the same - no loss or gain. I've been reading up some of the symptoms of some of the things it could possibly be but he doesn't have any of those symptoms (except thinning fur....but its only on his tail).

I suppose it could be possible he is grooming it too much even though I do not see him doing it???? I still find hairballs he pukes up........

The only change I can think of that we did in the past few months is keep the heat a bit higher than usual.....don't know if that would have any effect???

That would have the inside air drier, but you'd notice him acting a tad itchy and grooming.

You can certainly try adding humidifiers in the house and give him some fish oil to help his skin and coat. But it may not help if there's another cause to this.
