Iced In!

The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is iced in! DFW airport was closed down earlier, but at last report, there was a single runway open. Most of the roads are impassable and there's lots of wrecks out there involving 18 wheelers. It's currently 17º and WINDY. All of the schools are closed. Many businesses are closed. I'm currently waiting for a call from my boss telling me if we're going to open or if we're going to be closed today. If we stay closed, that will be the first time we've been closed since I started working there in 1994.

For those of you suffering from this horrid weather, stay warm, stay indoors, and stay safe!

yeah, and running out of cigarettes.... no good!
Oh wow, I heard there was going to be ice in the south! I hope you don't have to work. It isn't worth your life.

Our winter storm warning starts at 10 tonight through 10pm on Wednesday.

Went out and got food for the barn kitties and birdseed. We will bring in the police radio from the shop and listen to that during the storm.

Stay safe everyone, don't go out if you don't have to!

You city people should take a bit of advice from those who live way out of cities: keep emergency supples of coffee, milk (frozen), bread (also frozen), tinned sammich meats, and smokes just in case. While I AM outta milk, I still have bread, sandwich fixings, tobacco and coffee beans kept in reserve

Today' weather hereL -53°F with the windchill. NOTHING will start in this crap. At least I got enough cat food and people food in the house....moreso cat food since I have two temporary 'lodgers' in the house; Jack came back in and brought Tippy with him.

I live about 60 miles from Ft Worth. The wintry mix got us, too. The wind, however, is a totally different beast! Oh my! It is really COLD out there!

The view of the backyard from my study:

Stay warm everyone!

Dottie's school cancelled for today. Maybe they should have held it, and showed the student truck drivers how to drive on the snow?

Apparently even the experienced truck drivers need a refresher course. So many rigs stranded on the highways.

We have flurries again and the sun is trying to shine. WINDY!! 17º with wind chill 2º. Too cold to be outside!

I wrote on the other thread that a snow day has been called for my school district for tomorrow - which hardly ever happens and never so far ahead.

Just got an email from the shelter that they are closing early today. And that they will be closed tomorrow and that no volunteers should come. Only the minimal number of kennel staff will be there to care for the animals. It's my regular day, so I'm off there, too.
It's the monthly lowcost spay and neuter clinic day at the shelter, so that's a bummer.

Besides shoveling snow (over and over) I intend to read, knit, watch movies, practice the cello, make brownies, read /write on tcs, and cuddle with my kitties.

Everyone stay safe!

Mmmmm, brownies.
At least there's a Law & Order SVU marathon on today. I can watch that when I'm not running the snowblower.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you on the "ice storm" path that your power stays on. I would hate to think of just how cold you would be without any heat, and on the weather last night they were saying how dangerous these storms can be because of the weight of the ice on power lines.

Here in sunny AZ our HIGH tomorrow is only expected to reach 48 degrees. I don't recall ever having a high that low .

Anyway, everyone out there in this mess...TAKE CARE!!!!!
for everyone affected! The Route 10 drivers wouldn't have a lot of experience with that weather!

Wonder how many of those trucks have jelled fuel? They don't put the additives in the fuel in the southern states. Friend of mine has his own anti-jell additives when he heads to the deep south, just in case; he knows as he heads north again, the fuel will jell on him.

I have no idea, but these are major thoroughfares, so I would think they'd know, especially in this part of the state. We're far north enough to get this icky stuff at least once a year.

Right now it's not doing much of anything in central PA. I was out for my walk over lunch and the streets don't even look that bad. Yet. The bad icing is to hit us overnight. If we have a state of emergency, my office will be closed
I'm hoping for a state of emergency! I want a day off work!

I hear Missouri is getting hit hard. Stay safe all. What a way to start February

UGH UGH UGH!!!! The cold water pipes are frozen in our master bath already. Sure the toilet is next! The master is on the second floor and it faces north and that particular part of our house is not brick. It's double insulated, but not enough to withstand these temps. So I get to babysit pipes for the next few days!!! UGH!!!!

A man was found dead and covered in snow in my town a bit ago. Bless his heart. It's really nasty out there.

On a humorous note--I was at the grocery store yesterday and decided to buy the beer and wine for our SuperBowl party while I was there. At the checkout, an older woman glanced at my purchases and wryly said, "I see you're getting ready for the cold weather!"

My neighbor sat up and watched the storm blow in last night. Said there was thunder and lightning while it was snowing. Crazy!

Just made a big bunch of chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches for the party on Sunday. I think I may have to "sample a couple" before the day is done.

Back to the pipes!

I live in the same area as Bastetservant (northwest suburbs Chicago) and yes, the school listing is long in the television!!!! Everything is closing for tomorrow. We got some snow this morning and then a break, but the big stuff is coming later this afternoon. I too am snuggling with cats, reading, posting on TCS, and am going to make BROWNIES too (like Robin). Everyone stay safe please.

Actually, I've seen snow in Phoenix. Not common, but when you travel all over the country, you'll see that sort of thing.

Just by the way, although this one is pretty cold (for this area), it's normally northerners who have the most trouble with "ice events" here in Texas. Why? Because usually we have them at about 30 degrees, and at that temperature, ice has a coefficient of friction approaching zero. At zero degrees, ice's COF is much higher, making it much easier to drive on. Northerners think, "Ice is ice." Nope.

Today's snow is just about done falling. Don't know what the official total is. They were predicting 6 to 8 inches today with another 12 to 18 tomorrow.

It's not so bad when I don't have to go out into it. But I did cancel an appointment for the 4th time in two weeks. Hopefully no snow on Friday.
Nothing here yet near Lake Ontario.....10pm is zero hour! We brought up 2 loads of wood, finished roof raking from the last snow...UGH! I can tell you though that the birds KNOW what is coming. It was a full time job today just keeping the feeders full. It' s frenzy out there.

Lots of schools are already closed....something that is seldom done the day before a storm.

We are all in this one together...it helps to read and keep in touch with eachother during this.
Had about two hours of sleet and now we've got snow and sleet falling together, and it's falling FAST. We're far enough north of Indy that we're missing most of the ice, but Indy is pretty much shutting down. I'm hoping for a second snow day tomorrow just so I don't have to go out in this crap, otherwise I'm going to just call in.
Wow, that's some bad weather, stay safe everyone, TCS will be sure busy over the next few days.xx
post #24 of 30
Well the drive home was very bad. White out conditions, and no traction. But I'm home now. Can't see far down the street. I feel for anyone out in this, especially animals.

Yes, the animals. I had a raccoon at the bird feeder yesterday afternoon. A rara sight in the middle of winter here. But he was so hungry, just a baby from last spring.

I threw out some bread with peanut butter on it. I saw his prints this am and the bread was gone.

Keep the critters in your thoughts and prayers.

None. Twenty degrees is well above the cloud point of virtually all the diesel sold in the U.S. Ten might be a concern, and we're expecting 15 degrees tonight.

The good news is that I'm taking the week off. I was afraid it would be warm all week, then be cold next week when I have to go back to work, but it looks like it's working out for the best now.
Rolling power outages have begun here...sigh. Toilet frozen, cold water frozen in 2 bathrooms. No school for second day.

But, both fireplaces are going, cats are warm, plenty of food. Could be worse.

I didn't know that; just know what my friend told me. Not sure he's been to Texas in winter but he does cuss about other southern states and their fuel. Our diesel is supposed to be good to -25°F but I don't trust them so put Polarmaxx in anyway.

We, too, are having random power outages to help keep the power grid working due to the high demand on electricity. So far, we've not lost power, but that may be because we're on the same grid as the hospital and/or the fire station.

My thermostat is set at 66º and I'm so cold! The kitties are napping in their beds with their heating pads and the husband is taking a nap under the electric blanket. I'm getting ready to head to the kitchen and bake some cookies.

It's now 15º and cloudy. Thankfully, all our pipes are still working and not frozen. Travel on streets is somewhat improved, but still treacherous. I was supposed to work 1p-9p, but the store is only going to be open 10-5. My boss called me earlier and gave me the option of coming in 10-5 or taking a vacation day. Guess which I chose?!? I figure he's been off for 2 weeks and I've been managing the store, so he can man it for the next 2 days without me.

Should have great weather this weekend for the Super Bowl. Oh! And my tomatoes have sprouted, so hope springs eternal!

I made caramel popcorn for the party on Sunday this morning, then some pocket sandwiches for lunch. All the laundry is washed, dried and folded.

It's bad when you are looking for chores to do! LOL

I'm hoping that school is going again tomorrow. I'd like some normalcy to return.

Stay warm!
