Need advice for new adopted cat

Hi, I am adopting a male 2 yr. old cat on Friday. I would like suggestions on what type of dry food is good to feed him. I have read the store brands are not all that healthy for the cat. Tell me your favorite top brands and any other suggestions to help my 2 yr. old kitty feel comfortable in his new home. Thanks!

Welcome to TCS! Congratulations on the soon to be new addition!

To ease the transition I would start him off on whatever he is currently eating. A food transition should be done slowly, as an abrupt change can make him sick (vomiting, loose stools, etc).

As for top ten brands, that will vary from one person's opinion to the next. More expensive doesn't necessarily mean better quality. Some things I look for in a food are: no byproducts & few grains.

We are just beginning to use Buffalo Blue Wilderness food and the cats like it so far. There are lots of great foods out there...and lots of options (wet, dry, raw, etc). Peruse this forum and you will find lots of brand suggestions and also lots of "what not to get" type suggestions.

Congratulations on your new family member.

White cat lover, I agree with starting him out on what he is currently eating but eventually I would like to change him over to a better dry food. I am thinking Wellness maybe or are there any other good brands in this price range? By the way I had a white cat for 15 yrs. We had to put her down over a year ago. I miss her terribly and am ready to fill my heart with another kitty. She had one green eye and one blue eye and she wasn't deaf. She was like a part of our family and she grew up with my kids.

I white cats.

Anyways....on to the topic. I like Wellness, although it can be a bit $$ for the quality. I have a few kitties who did well on it, but one who has food issues (itchies) that cannot eat it. IMO, there are foods out there that are similar in quality for far cheaper.

You can go the grain free route, Taste of the Wild is reasonably priced & IMO a decent quality. It is one of the staples in my kitties diet. (With as many as I have, I do mix a few food depending on their needs)

I also have one who has food issues (vomiting) that can handle very few foods - one of the staples in her diet is Natural Balance. They have LIDs - Limited Ingredient Diets - which work wonders for her. That said, I have one kitty who cannot tolerate NB at all - she will become very ill if she eats any of it.

What type of stores do you have access to? Petsmart? Petco? Independent pet store?

Petsmart's store brand, Authority, is a decent food for the quality/price, if you need to work w/in a certain budget.

That is my favorite dry so far, and makes up 25% of their diet. Been through BB Kitten Chicken, and Wellness Chicken and Rice Kitten and Adult complete care, along with the Purina One they were originally on.

The Wilderness wet I thought was too expensive though, so for wet they get a mix of Wellness, regular Blue Buffalo, and the Nutro Natural Choice complete care flavors all in pate (not fans of chunky/gravy).

They used to love Wellness chicken and beef flavors, so I bought it in bulk in 12oz, but after a case started being less and less enthusiastic, so learned my lesson that they love variety in flavors for their wet. Gave em new flavors every meal and they wolf it down and have healthy poos and even Wesley now has a shiny coat (used to be dull).

I also feed California Natural for dry food as the limited ingredients are better for sensitive tummies. For wet, I rotate between Wellness, Soulistic, Natural Balance, Before Grain, Nutro Max... I also stay away from by-products

Welcome to TCS Can't wait to see pics of your new addition!

Thanks everyone, the lady I adopted from suggested Buffalo Blue Wilderness so we will start mixing that in gradually until he gets used to the new food. He is a real sweetheart and I can tell he is going to be a great addition to our family.

Wilderness is a good food, and I did try it at one point, but for my Pipsqueak it didn't help with stool issues. I finally found a food that works for all of my cats, and I now use Wellness Core. It is quite pricey, but the cat's poops are not quite firm!!. Plus they love it....

Costco's house brand is a good food for the price. $15 buys you a 25 pound bag, and it has no corn or by products. I mix it with grain free wet food.
