Thanks guys.
Should find out tomorrow how well her kidneys are recovering and how well she's going to cope off the IV.

Just caught up with all this - so glad she is responding well. Many many good vibes for a full recovery.

she keeps improving!

We found it best for our kitties to not visit them at the hospital - it just makes them get excited that they're coming home, and it's like we're abandoning them there all over again.
It's probably best the way things worked out.

I have to disagree with you there.
I think showing up every day shows them that even though you leave again, you always come back. I've always visited cats when they have to be in the hospital.

I'm sure they are fine either way though, as long as they are getting good care. And no matter how you look at it, it's stressful.

Continuing vibes for Mackerel

Otto, I think it depends upon the cats and is a very individual thing. When a cat throws itself at the cage, lunging so aggressively at the bars over and over again, that the vet/techs are worried he's going to hurt himself or pull out his IV, and the vet suggests you no longer visit for the cat's health, it's really best not to visit.

Yes, it is an individual thing, cat by cat basis I would say. In the situation you describe I agree with you, that would be too much stress on both cat and human. So it would depend on how each cat reacts to visits, then.

I've never visited where the cat was kept in the cage. I always have been show into a room and kitty was brought to me.

When we first got Hannah and she was in the hospital for 5 days, the vet called us and asked us to come visit. It was the only time she'd eat well! She would eat, but very sparingly, when we weren't there. When we visited her, she'd eat a whole 3 oz of food in one setting!

So, I do think it's a cat by cat thing.

I don't mean to hijack the thread... but any time any of our kitties have been in the hospital for more than a day, it's because they were in ICU, so they had to remain confined.

OK, so here's the update I've had so far this morning: Mackerel started showing signs of problem with water retention last night so they had to take her off the IV. This morning she's still doing ok, they've just taken blood and will have the results in about half an hour, hopefully.

Ok, just got a text saying the bloodwork is showing a bit of improvement. Not sure how much would be ideal, but any improvement is good, right?

Ok, so K sent me a message saying that there was some improvement, I replied with:

"As much improvement as we'd want to show a good recovery?" She said:
"Not yet, but any improvement is a good start."

I'm going to go up and see her I think. I had a job interview this afternoon that I'll cancel to make time for it.

OK, just got back from seeing Mackerel. Like I said earlier they took out the drip last night because of a problem with water retention. I was really shocked when I saw her, she looked like she'd put on a LOT of weight, but it was all water from the water retention. She seemed really uncomfortable.
K says it'll take a day or so for her body to absorb the water, and they'll do another blood test then and hopefully her results will have improved even more.
At the beginning of the time we had together (I was lucky, able to be there about an hour and a half!
) she was a little lethargic and not really paying attention, but by the end of it she was butting my hand and marking me with by rubbing the side of her mouth against my fingers. <3 She hasn't done that for a week so I think she's definitely starting to feel better. She even purred a little. I'm so glad that I got to see her but also a little scared because she still looks very sick.
They say that when she starts grooming herself again it'll be a really really good sign that she's feeling better.

Awwww, I'm glad you got to see her and that she showed you some love. Poor little kitty. Sending vibes that she perks up after the fluids are absorbed.

You and Mackerel are in my prayers. It was good for her and you to spend time together. She sounds like a love bug.

I hope things turn around quickly and she can be home with you.
