Has your Cat Found your Button?

Buttercup's latest trick when her plea for playtime goes ignored is to run to her litterbox closet which has a clearly audible catdoor on it. I open the closet door only to have her jump out trilling and wiggle through my legs with her back arched up content in victory....

I like to stop whatever I am doing and check their potty when I hear the catdoor for health issues, but now its a false alarm nine out of ten times thanks to her!

So what tricks have your cats learned?

The persistent little poot Flambe will come in and play with the wires on the back of my desk until I come around the end of the desk, at which point he gleefully dashes into the living room, expecting me to chase him.

Larry will put his front paws up on the desk where I'm on the computer, right by my elbow, and start chewing on my elbow. He just started doing this. It doesn't even hurt, it's like, "nom, nom.....I'm here...play with me", and when I swing my chair around to him he goes hopping off, his tail high in the air.

It makes me laugh. If I follow him, he flops down and rolls over, clearly an invitation for me to pick him up.

Parker found my button long ago. His lip smacking is VERY loud...he's learned that if I sleep in past breakfast time, his grooming will wake me. If he wants some attention, he will sit my by feet and lick himself nonstop until I say his name. I know he can't help the sound, but its extremely annoying first thing in the morning.

Our cats have found buttons I never knew I had....Sometimes when I hold onto Hemi she bites and pulls hard on the pendant of my necklace, or a zipper if I'm wearing a zippered shirt.
My personal "favorite" is when Ollie decides to walk over me when I'm asleep he has delicate little paws that he places with incredible precision on the most painful areas he can find. He also likes walking on my boyfriend's chest and putting feline butt to human face...when he gets shooed away he (again with great accuracy) goes to try to knead on tender parts.
Of course both of them "cat" us....which we have defined as having the psychic ability to know exactly where a human is going to put their feet next and placing themselves in that space at the most inappropriate time. Hemi adds an interesting variation to this...she sometimes jumps from the side and wraps herself around my calf (no claws!). As I type she is trying to lay across my arms.
As annoying as it can be, most of it makes me grin (except when"catting" succeeds)

Flowerbelle found a new button. We have a small stack of DVDs on top of the player in the bedroom. Gary is ADD/OCD, and can't fall asleep (or do much of anything) without the distraction of something going on in the background. Since we've learned to ignore most of her button-pushing, she keeps looking for new ones.

Yup - pushing the stack of DVDs off the top of the player. I'm pretty sure that even though she's deaf she could hear that one!

Max usually sleeps on a shelf on the headboard of my bed. There are two tights on the headboard with a twist switch at their base. When Max decides that it is time for me to wake up, he will chew on the switches. When I hear the sound, I immediately push max off of the headboard. Sometime he lands on the bed and sometimes he falls on the floor (depending on how hard I push). He always jumps back up onto the headboard and resumes chewing on the switch. I am terrified that he will break the switch and get electrocuted or start a fire, so I immediately shove him off again. This process continues until I get up. I never feed him immediately after waking up because I don't want him to manipulate me, but he still always does stuff to annoy me until I get up. He never ever does this at any other time of the day.

Another thing that he does to annoy me in the morning is jumping up on the TV stand and going behind the TV. I am worried that he will chew on the wires so I always throw him off when he goes behind the TV. He only does this in the morning too.

Sometimes he jumps up on the dresser in the morning. The dresser is pretty high so I put stuff there that i don't want the cats to mess with. So I always throw him off when he jumps up there. Sometimes he actually turns the radio on when he is on the dresser. lol.

He only does these annoying things in the morning. Obviously after getting up to throw him off several times in a row, I am already up and can't get back too sleep so I get out of bed for the day. Once I'm out of bed for good, he stops doing these annoying things.

My personal assistant likes to "help" by putting his head on the CTRL key, and his paw on mouse pad.

The CTRL key drives me nuts because all of a sudden weird thing happen when I try to type.

But, it does get my attention.

DaOldGuy - ok, how did you get such a nice pic of a black cat? My efforts end up with a black cat shaped blob with glowing eyes!!ROFL

That said, the loonies in the house push buttons by dashing madly, making assorted screeches, growls, yowls and hisses. The real newcomer to indoor life (the above mentioned black blob that shows up in my photos) pushes a button by stalking majestically past (a good trick with that absurd tail of his) and emitting pathetic sounding mews - not sure what he wants or if he is just saying 'Hi"

It's all about the angle you take the picture on for a black cat to look like a cat rather than a blob on legs

My lovely two learnt how to open doors and drawers to find their food, but if they can't they both do a pathetic mew like your starving them until they get fed

Laurie sooty does the knocking cds and dvds over to frustrating when its the middle of the night into laminate flooring lol

Marc loves to jump to the top of our doors and swing himself about.... Narrowly missing the sprinkler system that rests right above the door each time. He's either going to cut himself, or flood my apartment.

Usually when Mack wants my attention and doesn't get it it's when I'm working at the computer. She'll mew first, and then watch me silently for a while, and then sit up on her hind legs and 'tap' my leg with her paws. Very gently. Tap tap tap tap tap tap. Then I look down and see her gazing up at me with wide eyes and I can't do anything but scoop her up and give her lots of huggles!

I'm so easily manipulated. XD

Pipsqueak will lay on the floor close to the fridge, stove, or any other place he puts his toys, and will fake me out as to whether there is a toy to be found under there. He knows I will get the flashlight and we will look together!! Nine out of ten times there is no toy to be found. .

Ritz likes to get up early, like 4 a.m. early. When I want to sleep in a little, like until 4:30 a.m., I just try to ignore her. Until she walks from in between my legs (where she sleeps) up on to my (small) chest. And sits. And looks at me adoringly.
As I've said before: sleep is waayy overrated

now this is really pushing a button:

Looks so innocent doesn't she? lol. She has been doing this on and off since she was a kitten....I've been intending on constructing or buying one that has the metal flap over the tp.

Jamie has literally found our buttons, meaning light switches. He loves to turn off the big reading lamps in the kitchen and living room when one or both of us are reading. It's much more effective than just sitting on the book or newspaper.

He's also figured out the switch on the little reading lamp for my Kindle. I'll be reading in bed, with Jamie "innocently" sitting or lying beside me, and all of a sudden a paw goes out and turns it off.

We taught Squeak to roll over some months back, which she usually does on command (for treats, of course!). So now she has started begging for her treats by running in front of us, meowing in her repetitive squeaky voice, then just as we get to the bedroom, she drops to the floor and starts rolling back and forth several times. Then she gets up and stares at us meowing again until we reward her with a few of her favorite Temptations treats!

Oh yes. At least Spooky has. Mulder is kind of... slow.

If Mulder wants something, he just jumps on my lap and headbutts my face or whatever I'm working on until I attend to him. He's a big cat, hard to ignore. Sometimes if he is very persistent I have to lock him out of wherever I am if what I'm doing is important.

What Spooky does depends on the situation.

If I am trying to go to sleep he will knock things off the nightstand/dresser/bathroom counter, attack cords, run around meowing, walk on my body, paw at the window shade (obnoxious noise) and sometimes he swings the door shut which is startling and usually gets my attention.

If I am actually sleeping and he wants me to wake up he will sit on the nightstand and paw at my pillow next to my face until I move or react, then meow at me. If I ignore him, he gets on the pillow and paws my face directly. Not scratching. If I continue to ignore him, he will go walk all over DH until DH tells me to deal with my cat.

If I am awake and not doing what he wants, he starts meowing and knocking things over. He really likes cups with liquids in them. He just walks over to them and swats them over and watches me run for a towel. We use lidded cups here now. Failing cup availability, he will knock over anything on a table - mail, books, pens, etc., get into cords or he will play bite my feet.

Spooky always seems to know what action is required in what situation to really push that "button"!
