Is it normal or even okay for a cat to drink A LOT of water? Thomas is kind of excessive in his water drinking. He was kind of before b/c it felt like I was turning the faucet on every two seconds, but now that he has free access to the cat fountain, he goes up for a drink literally every 5 minutes, unless he is sleeping. Should I be concerned?

It could be the excitement with the fountain... I would watch him for a couple/few days, and if he keeps drinking too much water, I would take him to the vet... IMHO that could be a sign something is wrong...

How old is Thomas? Excessive drinking was the tip off that my two cats were diabetic.

If it does not abate, a vet visit would be called for. Do not wait too long. Better to be safe. Both my diabetics were easily controlled.

Thomas is 10 months old. I'll keep an eye on it, but he's been a heavy drinker (sounds like he's an alcoholic!) since we got him. While Walter would drink-drink-drink from the faucet, Thomas would sit there what seemed like forever and drink. He's been that way for the month we've had them.

You probably should take him to the vet, just incase.

I'd take him in to get checked out by the vet.

My Tonya drank a lot the first 3 months I had her. I was concerned. I never had a cat drink that much before.

I took her in and she had urine and blood tests. All was fine.

Now, in the last month, the drinking of water has gone down to more typical levels of other cats. I have no idea what that was all about. She did have only dry food at the shelter. At our house she gets one canned meal (2 dry) a day with water mixed into this food. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Maybe her body has adjusted to getting more water in food? I don't know.

Tonya is nearly 4 years old, by the way. Even at that age, my vet doubted diabetes before the tests. But, again, the tests were all normal. These results eased my mind.

That's what I thought, maybe he's still loving the novelty of the fountain.
But keep an eye on it, just in case it's something else.
