Rosiemac's post about the cats being so lucky reminded me of something that happened several years ago. I'd like to share, if you don't mind.

Our son called one morning and said he was coming home for dinner and asked me to make his favorite tuna and noodle casserole. OK, not a problem. And I decided to make some peanut butter cup cupcakes for dessert.

Made the cupcakes, baked them, and set them on a rack to cool. Each cupcake also contained a mini peanut butter cup. Once they were cooled, I was going to frost them.

My recipe for the tuna casserole calls for two cans of tuna; I always open one more can, just to share with the cats, so there were three cans of tuna draining in the colander in the sink.

Not thinking (obviously!) about the tuna, I decided to vacuum the living room. Ms. Pepe, who is deathly afraid of the noisy vacuum, was lying on top of the television. Well, when I got the vacuum out, she jumped off the tv. But she had her claws entwined in a doily on the tv. Sitting on the doily was a beautiful crystal basket. She jumped, taking the doily with her. The basket smashed against the living room register and shattered. I cleaned up the fragments, then went around checking kitty paws for cuts. Thankfully all the cats were OK.

Went into the kitchen....and there was BooBoo on the kitchen counter, carefully picking the peanut butter cups out of the cupcakes and eating them. Knowing that chocolate wasn't good for cats, I rushed back to the computer room for the phone and called the vet. Told the vet tech what was going on and, as I was talking to her, I walked back out to the kitchen.......just to time to see Banshee's tubby butt sticking out of the sink; she was chomping away at the draining tuna in the colander. And there was BooBoo, back up at the cupcakes. I started yelling at Banshee to get out of the tuna and then at BooBoo to please get back off the counter. Hung up on the vet tech. Got the cats back down on the floor and cleaned every thing up.

Called the vet tech back, who by now is laughing like crazy at me. She assured me that, unless Boo had had quite a bit of chocolate, chances are he'd be OK. He had probably pulled four peanut butter cups out of the cupcakes, but only ate 1-1/2 of them til I got to him the first time. The second time, he was trying to finish that other half of a cup, so it wasn't too bad.

So I did manage to throw out what little was left of 3 cans of tuna. Opened 3 more cans (yes, the cats still got their tuna, even Banshee got some of the new tuna), drained them and was able to make the casserole. And got the cupcakes frosted. Our son came home for dinner and life was good.

The cats definitely won that day!
