1. how young can a kitten go into "heat"?

2. how young can you spay/nueter a kitten

question 1 background:
today I observed my lady cat doing some strange things (to me it was) she was just rolling around on the floor. I was wondering if this has anything to do with mating or similiar anything.. Daisy is like 20 weeks old (I believe, we got her and tucker around thanksgiving 2010, and they were 12 weeks maybe) As she was rolling around tucker (male cat) would go over to her and it looked as though he was trying to 'mount her,' now this looked stange to me because he would playfully bite her as well.. maybe I am being paranoid but I dont want more kittens.. and my mother and father said they r waiting till their 6 months old before getting em 'fixed' which leads to the second question.

How young can you get kittens into the vet to get 'fixed?' I mean is 5 months old enough? can we get one done and wait on the other or get both done? I mean I dont know how long to wait.. like I said I guess I am just paranoid and to new to the cat behavior to know whats going on..

any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Ethan

Separate them immediately if you don't want kittens...
Female cats, although not the norm, can go into heat as young as 4 months... Usually at 6... 5 months is not uncommon.
Your girl is very ready to be spayed, there is no reason to wait for 6 months. Most breeders do it at 12 weeks before sending the kittens home with their owners without an issue...
Spaying during a heat can be a little more complicated with a little more blood loss so your vet might want to wait for this to be over - please discuss with him/her.
Get her done first as he can still get her pregnant for a couple of months after neuter.

Kittens can be spayed and neutered as soon as they weigh 3 lbs, but not all vets ascribe to that practice. Some like them to be as old as 6 mos. We had Tumbles neutered when he was 5.5 mos and my vet wasn't totally comfortable doing it that "early". He did fine.

Call your vet and ask when they like to spay/neuter. Explain your situation and get them in ASAP. If the vet wants to wait, call around until you find a vet who'll do it sooner.

I did seperate them, I put her in a room and shut the door. the latch isnt all that great so there is a piece of wood about hips high blocking it and the is a tub full of quilts holding it in.. I called my mother at her work and told her about it so hopefully it will be taken care of soon.

It's 2lbs/1kg, most breeders get it done from 10 weeks, shelters at 8 weeks. If you schedule the appointment now she should be off call by the time you can get in, as some vets won't spay during heat because of the added risk.

Do keep them apart, both are quite capable of breeding at 5 months.

I'd keep them seperate from each other, until their fixed if I were you.

Fixing can be done at different times, depending on the vet. Lynxx was fixed at 8 weeks old. Luna was fixed when she was 5 months old, that vet didn't care about the age, she just needed to be over 4lbs. Midnight was 4 months old when he was fixed. The vet we have now waits until their 6 months old. Depends on where you go. Check with your local vets, check with your local shelters as well.

It sounds like she is going into heat. YIKES!! Get her in for spay tomorrow!! Call your vet and they might get her in immediately. Keep her in her own room until you get the spay done.

They can spay kittens as young as ten weeks as long as they are at least two pounds!! It surprised me when I found this out. Today, most kittens are spayed well before four months because some can go into heat early. This is why we have such a cat overpopulation. Alot of people think you need to wait till over six months to spay/neuter and that's why kittens end up having kittens!!!!!!

ok, now that have actually seen it happen, my parents now know whats going on. I do believe that she beginning to go into heat because my mom and dad both see that she is the one who instigates him over there.. at our humane society they are going to do a free spay/nueter thing in febuary and I dont think they/ I can even last that long..

we have them now in seperate rooms now.. we put food, water, an old sheet and a litter box in my room and I have the door shut so he is going to be sleeping in my room tonight an who knows how long... They (parents) were both talking about it, and they mentioned that we only need to get one in (into the vets), now is that true, well obviously, but will that take care of the problem, I mean if she is "in heat" and he gets fixed, will that take care of the problem and will he still go after her??? if she gets fixed, will he still go after her and still try to make woopy?

I aappreciate all the feedback.

Both cats have to be FIXED!!!!! Neuter the male, spay the female. If the shelter does this as part of the adoption and it is included, why wouldn't you get both fixed. Just make the appointment and take them both in the same day . OK?? All cats need to be spayed and neutered. Do you see stray and lost cats outside roaming around hungry, cold and fending for themselves?? Most of those poor souls are the product of people not getting their pet cats spayed and neutered. So please, save lives, spay and neuter your cats. It is free through the shelter you got them from, and a requirement from the shelter when you signed the adoption papers. I am sooooooooooo glad you found our site and now you have your two cats separated so there won't be more kittens to find homes for. The shelter's are full of unwanted cats, PLEASE no more. Spay and Neuter!!!!!

Longterm, they both need to be fixed. The girl asap since she may have mated, and also because males are fertile for up to 2 months after neutering so can still impregnate an entire girl.
So if you can only get one at a time do her first.

Left intact, he will probably start to spray soon. If she continues to have heat cycles she's at risk of pyometra - which can be deadly.

Some neutered boys do show interest in intact girls in heat (mine do, they yodel and mount), and some spayed girls will be hounded by intact boys. So really, getting them both done will make everyone much happier.

we didnt adopt them. my neighbor picked them up from being out in the open. and we are keeping our eye on them to make sure they do not interact like that again.. My mom made a appointment with a humane society and earliest they can do it is next week sometime so all I can do is wait.

Please be responsible and keep them apart, you cannot watch them 24/7 and cats mate quickly

Ok you have a plan then!. Please keep them separated. And get them both fixed next week. You can contact your local humane societies for assistance in low cost spay/neuter clinics. If for some reason you cannot afford to have them fixed let the societies know this and they should be able to assist you anyway to get them neutered as they won't want the chance of unwanted kittens and most humane societies can offset the cost for families who don't have the funds.

we are being responsible, we are getting them done sometime this week. vets and shelters are busy so it could take a while for some ot get an appointment to get it done.. Please dont reply with negativity or say such things that we arent being responsible with the situation. We are, things take time.

Thanks again

You are, certainly, being responsible!!!! And you came on this asking for help. Good for you! And now they are separated and you and your parents will get them fixed, and then they will have a much more happy life together and will soon enough be back together playing.

Seeing as how it was Friday when you called the vet, there's no wonder you can't get in until next week. You're doing the right things (vet appts, keeping them separated) and you've got a plan. Good for you and your family!
