Introducing a Kitten.

Thread Starter
We lost our 12 yr old male manx to cancer in Dec. Max was Molly's buddy since we got her at 8 weeks, she is now 6 yr old. She is highly intelligent though slightly psychotic and very close to my husband and me. She is also a manx and has all of their mannerisms. Since Max's death she had seemed a little depressed and we have now decided to bring in a kitten. We have found a 12 week old female manx at our local rescue sanctuary and have decided to foster with the intent to adopt. Now my question any ideas on how to introduce the two. Molly has never been introduce to another cat since she was brought into our house as a wee kitten, so we don't know how she will react. I have talked to the foster and she is giving me a towel that the kitten(Mikki) is sleeping on, I will have it in the house for a week before Mikki arrives.
HELP !!

Seperate them by putting the newcomer in a spare room by herself with all the amenities (litter, food, water). Wait for the kitten to get used to you and the room, then you can start feeding them on opposite sides of the door, and exchanging blankets/other things that smell like each other. Basically, just take it slow and let the cats decide when they want to be introduced. The kitten will most likely start running for the door when you go into the room after a day or two, which is a sign that she is ready to try exploring the rest of the house and meeting Molly.

This is what I do. (first of all females tend to take longer to accept any new pet, so be prepared for a long introduction time - could take several months!)

1. Set up a room in the house for the kitten with own litter pan, food and water. Leave the kitten in there for about a week to get used to things and to you.

2. Once your older cat is used to the sound and smells of the kitten, and seems curious and not hissing too much, then put the kitten in a carrier and set it out so the cat and kitten can see each other and not get physical.

3. Before you introduce them face to face (supervise at all times) either wash both in the same shampoo, or sprinkle some cornstarch baby powder on both and rub in. Trick is for the cats to both smell the same to each other.

4. TRIM ALL NAILS before they are together. And expect hissing, growling, chasing to occur for several weeks. As long as they are not really physically fighting, leave them alone to sort it out.

5. Have two bowls of food or feed separate so they don't get upset.

This is what I do with quicker acceptance. And I also do these things too. Feed them treats together. Play with string toys together.

Our Ling (female) took 6 months to accept Charlie (our first Oci kitten). She took 1 month to accept Jack (2nd Oci kitten). Charlie and Jack bonded within 2 days and wanted to play together.

So you don't know how long they will take. I know bringing in Zorro in a few months - we will have to go thru it all over and I have no clue as to how long both cats will take.

Also have 2 litter pans so one doesn't stop the other from using it.
