Morning, we're still fighting the flu here, yeehaw.

So my question relates to illness, do you have any home remedies for being sick with flu or colds? How bout what do you do, just rest or fight thru it?

We try to use preventatives first and foremost. Hand sanitizer, vitamins, coughing/sneezing into elbows or cloth, rest.

We use a variety or natural substances to fight off minor infections. Oil of oregano is one that we've had good luck with as long as it's not the flu.

Vicks vaporub on the feet, covered w socks helps.

Lots of liquids, soups, vitamin rich foods.

With fevers I only treat if over 102.5, with Tylenol or advil. Like this wk, my DD has been nursing a fever of 103 - 104.5. we just keep her comfy, blankets if cold, a light one if hot.

A tsp of honey helps itchy scratchy throats.
Lemon vicks cough drops are the only ones mild enough that my DD will use em.
Humidifier or a sit in a steamy bathroom to help congestion.

If I get a sinus anything I have to take an allergy med, it's the only thing that relieves pressure.

We only treat coughs if they interfere with sleep. Coughing is healthy, gets yuckies out.

I think those are the main ones

Stay healthy folks.

I'll fight it out whenever I can.

My mother is a big believer in Vicks vaporub, not only on the feet, but also on her chest and neck. When I'm really bad, I'll put it right under my nostrils....the cats hate the stuff and won't come near me until the smell starts to wear off.

We take a multi-vitamin every day through the week, but not on the weekends.

I firmly believe that a good walk outside every day will help to ward off colds.

Halls lozenges for coughs and sore throat. I have high blood pressure, so I can't use a lot of the OTC cold remedies and such. One time my doctor told me to try Sudafed, but just the regular Sudafed.

I still swear by homemade chicken soup!

I try to get meds right away, because when I get sick it hangs, and doesn't go away unless I go to the doctors. None of the over the counter meds work for me, except Tylenol when I have a head ache.

At the first sign of scratchy throat and watery eyes, I mix equal amounts of honey and apple cider vinegar. Take a tablespoon everytime you think about it. It knocks it out for me nine times out of ten.

These are great tips as I am laying on the couch in front of the fire wearing all the clothes I can find and battling a bad cold of my own.

So far, hot tea with honey has helped a lot! So did Dh's homemade potato soup!

I don't get sick with a cold often, but I do get frequent sinus infections that go into my chest.

To help relieve pressure around the eyes, I heat up a rice sock and place on my forehead and/or over my eyes and nose. I sometimes put it on my chest if I'm sore or hurting from coughing.

To help open up nasal passages, I put a big pot of water on to simmer and add eucalyptus oil to the water. Really helps open up the nose!

If I have a sore throat and coughing, I mix into a mug of water, 1 T lemon juice, 1 T honey, and 1 T apple cider vinegar. Warm in the microwave and sip on it until it's gone. It tastes horrible, but works very well. You can also add some fresh ground up ginger root and it will help.

Adding Vitamin D to your regime of vitamins and supplements will help, too.

Garlic. Its strong, it tastes yucky, but it works!

When someone is sick in this house, we do garlic shots. Take a clove of garlic, and blend it with a can of v8 (the serving size cans). Then bottoms up!

For an extra kick, add 3 tbs of apple cider vinegar.

Do this daily for the duration of your illness.

Garlic contains an antibiotic/antiviral/anti fungal property when crushed or blended. It is said to be as strong as penicillin (against all organisms) except there is no bug that is immune to it.

You must drink it within an hour, as the bug killing goodies decompose very quickly. Also, you cannot heat it, it must be room temperature.
I have taken this for mrsa and kicked it, as well asnthe rest of my family for various bugs and infections. We have been an antibiotic free family for over 3 years!

Also, pertaining to pets, mix 1/2 cup of apple cider vinnager and 1 clove of garlic in a blender. If your pet has an ear infection or ear mites, use a dropper and drop 3 or 4 drops into each ear and massage the ears for a few min.

For ring worm or hot spots, soak a paper towel in the mix and compress it on the spot for 5 min 3 times a day. Kills the infection in a week. I spray my pets with a mix of garlic and apple cider vinnager 1x a week because my dog has a chronic issue with his skin and catches ringworm if the wind blows in the wrong direction. It keeps it at bay.

It's magic stuff!

The only thing I can say helps me for sure is sleep and rest and avoiding any stress to my immune system. This Christmas that just passed I was out in freezing temperatures, because I didn't have a car while I was in Bulgaria and had to walk, on top of that I slept at my cousin's house where I had no control over the temperature, so I was pretty cold there too. It was a major stress to my body, because in the states I rarely ever go out in the cold, and I have a space heater next to me at all times, so I got really sick which is very unusual for me. I basically had a really high fever for hours on end and I was hallucinating, it was so awful, and I didn't fully get better until I got back to the states ...
So yea, avoiding stress to your body!!! It may not work for some people who have been sick a lot though, I don't usually get sick.
