Hi! New here. First rescue.

Hi, my name is Katy. I have a 7 month old persian himalayan, and today had a stray tabby join our family.

I am new to strays, so please tell me if there is anything else I need to do. He is a big boy (I swear half mountain lion) and weighs in at just over 30 lbs. (he is not fat, very lean and healthy looking). His head is bigger then my husbands hand! Lol. He is neutered, so he was loved at one time.

I was getting my truck fixed, and was waiting in a room off the garage. I sat down and mr mountain lion walked up to me and rubbed all over me. I told the woman at the counter 'i love your cat! He's so lovey!' and she said you can have him if you want! He is a stray that's been roaming the area for a year. They let him hang out at the shop because the temps here in northern mn have been -20s. So of course I took him home...I'm a sucker for cuddly animals.

I ran to the vet and picked up some vaccines and dewormer and his own box, and gave them to him as soon as we got home. We then gave him a bath as he smelled like oil (my husband has some nice large battle scratches....not easy holding a 30lb stray in the tub....). I cleaned his ears and checked his fur. No mites or fleas! I then cut his nails (yes, he let me with no fight!).

He is now sitting on the couch with us and is on cloud 9 cleaning himself. Hasn't moved sence we let him in from the sunroom.

I have my other kitty in our room, and will alternate them for a week or so. I gave my Persian some booster vaccines and a new dose of the leukemia vaccine just in case, and want to wait a week or two before they meet.

By the way, we named him simba. It seems fitting, as he is HUGE and orange.

I also sprayed him with some apple cider vinegar, because he still has an oil smell from bin in a garage. I am hoping that kills it.

WOW he is such a sweetie and you're right - he's HUGE! Thank you for rescuing him!!!!!

We always isolate rescues for at least a few days just in case they're carrying anything that "blooms." It's also a really good idea to have him tested for FeLV and FIV, just in case. I know your kitty is vaccinated for FeLV, but the vaccine is only about 70% effective.

Of course... it's really hard to stick to any isolation rules when this poor guy obviously SO wants to be snuggly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not letting them come into contact at all. Simba goes in the sun room when we arnt cuddling, and when he is in the house baby (my Persian) goes in our bedroom. That way they arnt sharing anything. I will get him tested before they meet. I just ran into the vet today, purchased the vaccines and wormer and left.

Its just so hard not to give him a few min of cuddles here and there. All this cat wants is physical contact with a human. When he's inside with us, he has no urge to walk around, just cuddle and nuzzle, and when I go out to the sunroom, he practically climbs up me. He loves to be held and carried around like a baby (a heavy baby!).

I feel so bad for him because he obviously loves being cuddled so much, and was dropped off out here in the middle of nowhere to be alone. I cant imagine how he must have felt.

Apparently that happens alot per the vet. ( I'm new to the area). People drive out here and
dump their cats on farms thinking they will be happy. All the local rescues are over filled.

Now what would cause a cat to grow to such unnatural sizes, besides getting into a GNC outlet dumpster?

My Persian is maybe 8 lbs...max (he looks bigger but it's all fluff) samba is a monster to us!

Oh my GOSH that is a HUGE cat! You are right...more like a Mtn Lion! He is beautiful, though. What a wonderful heart you have for rescuing him.

I would just make sure you watch his stools to make sure he doesn't have parasites such as giardia or coccidia (which aren't killed by the regular de-wormers) and also get him to a vet or clinic for a rabies vaccine. I can't think of much else that you haven't already covered.

Thank you for the kind words. He had his first poo in his litter box and no worms visible or eggs. He had his wormer yesterday, so it should start coming out soon if they are in there (my dig gave birth to spaghetti after his wormer as a puppy).

He is inside on my lap right now. Introducing him to my 3 yr old while my 8 yr old is at school. Shes not touching him yet, but sitting next to us. So var all good. He was a little nervous at first, but now is purring and just watching her.

Learned something new! He loves his tummy rubbed! I have him on my lap and was petting his back. He flipped on his back and I massaged his chest and tummy. He started purring and kneading the air. He's still at it lol!

Good for you and good for Simba!
Seems like he was a giant vagabond waiting for someone like you!
Especially from seeing how friendly he is!
His name fits him well! It's so cute that he's a lap cat considering his size.

We recently adopted our DSH tabby cat from a shelter, who we also named Simba!

(He looks more like a mini-lynx than a lion and he's only 8 lbs but the name stuck...)

We often joke around by saying our Simba won the lottery by being adopted by us, but it seems like your Simba has too!

Ohhhhh tummy rubs!! You're so lucky! Dorothy, who we just adopted over the weekend, also likes her belly rubbed, and purrs and makes air biscuits too. And she's also orange! Not nearly as big though, but she is a little round around the middle..

Yes, I think Simba is finally home.

Sorry for the typos in my last post. My iPad auto corrects and it's hard to type with a cat adding extra letters during his kneading. Haha!

OMG He is HUGE and if he were tan/brown in color he would look like a mountain lion or for sure a cougar!!! What a love and how wonderful of you to take him home and keep him safe.

He was definitely somebody's cat at some time, he is so sweet. I can't believe you were able to bathe him. WOW!! Definitely, get a stool check, and there is a great product out we use at the shelter. It is called Profender and kills all stages of just about any type of worm your boy would have. It is a spot on treatment and goes on the back of the neck close to the back of the head so they don't lick it off. Check with your vet on this though. He probably has some kind of worms since being on his own for that long.

You have done a great thing

Feralvr- I bought a dewormer at the vet yesterday and gave it to him. It's the same stuff they give during an office visit. It's a bottle of orange stuff. I have 3 months worth of it!

Well.....we bathed him....didn't say it was easy....lol.

My husbands arms/hands look like they went through a meat grinder. And that's with gloves. After about 10 min of doing the twist and scratch, he grabbed the side of the tub and hung there long enough to scrub him down a few times. His wiskers were black from oil and dirt, and now he's all clean and sooo soft!

April- your baby is sooo cute! I love that type of cat! I actually prefer small cats....but this one had suck loving eyes, I couldn't say no. I actually never thought I would ever adopt a stray. I am more of a bred purebred type person, but there is just something about him, I couldn't just leave him at the garage.

What a BIG handsome boy!
He really does have those heart-melting eyes.
Some cats are just large. The father of my parents cat was 28lbs...so it might just be genetics. He's gorgeous, though.
Welcome to the site and thank you for taking the big guy in.

Thank you Katy!

I'm so glad you were there for your Simba, no matter your previous preferences on strays. That makes it extra admirable of you! And I'm sure he appreciates it and will continue to show you how grateful he is. (Especially after he loses all of the worms... poor darling!)

I know what exactly what you mean about preferences! There were some adorable kittens at the shelter when I adopted my Simba (and he was actually BIG compared to them) but we knew he was ours when we locked eyes, and then it was doubly confirmed when we got took him out of the cage to have a better look at his personality and how he reacted to us.

Awwwww! I just read through this thread - and I'll add my "bless you" for taking in this giant kitty!! He sounds like an absolute love, and obviously is used to being in a home. Hope the de-worming goes well! (LOL @ "gag" - I know....not pleasant.)
