Retitled to emphasize my question. Yesterday, Parker was prescribed Buspirone for his FHS symptoms. I had read some older posts about it, but is anyone using it now? If so, what luck have you had? He wants Parker on 5mg, once a day for 3 months. Is that the average dose? Most people said 5mg twice a day, even going up as time goes by. Is that for more severe cases or for different issues? Any weird side effects I should look out for? The vet didn't really give me any information on it. They were busy and sort of rushing people.

I'm scared to put him on stuff like that but he's going to have no fur left on his back legs soon and his constant grooming is waking me up every morning. Also, for those that may have tried it, how much did you pay for it? He said it was the cheapest one out there.

Also, they were not going to give Sami a blood test, but since finding the heart murmur, they will. Go figure, eh?

I have a very important question for you. Did your vet do a skin scraping to rule out allergy and any other possible causes for this problem?

Ophelia Rose was/sort of is still on Buspar (Buspirone). I have no idea her dosage, as I haven't had to pill her in awhile. If I'm remembering right, it's non-habit forming.

She was getting (1) 5mg pill 2x/day - which was a higher dosage than the vet really wanted her on. She was getting it for aggression/inappropriate urination.....she would pee all over, attack people/cats/dogs - completely "unhinged".

I saw no side effects or negative behaviors. As I read up online on it, I also sad the side effect of "very friendly". This former feral was clingy always wanting attention!

Any more questions, feel free to PM me. I know many do not like medicating, but in some instances I feel it is necessary. In Ophelia's instance I had no other options as I had tried most everything (including trying to find her a suitable home where she would be happy).

Violet: He did not do an allergy test. I don't even think it is necessary. Many factors have changed since he first started acting this way. Everything from moving, diet change, etc.
It all started when he had fleas in June 2009. He didn't react well to them at all and it sketched him right out. Even after treating the fleas, the behavior didn't stop. That is when I tried changing him to the grain-free food. That didn't help either.
I think the trauma from fleas sort of stuck with him. The way he acted when he first got them, is the way he is acting now, even though he was cleared of having them. Sort of like a compulsion now.

White Cat Lover: Thanks for your input. I really do not like the idea of medicating him this way either but I am running out of options. If this medication doesn't cost TOO much, I'd like to throw in a few bucks for a feliway diffuser as well. Hopefully it will help a little. Aside from that, I just do not know what to try. We are all getting annoyed by his behavior and I am sure he doesn't like it either. My poor baby, he is lucky I love him.

It was really cheap medication, if I remember right. I think when she was getting it regularly I'd get an entire bottle at a time, costing me like $10-$15/month?? That was almost 2 years ago (?) so don't quote me on that.....and obviously price varies by area.

Well, a skin scraping is not an allergy test. It's a quick, simple diagnostic test for finding/ruling out certain underlying problems that can cause many different symptoms including overgrooming.
