Adult male poops outside of litterbox frequently

Okay, I got logged out when writing this (in about 20 minutes GRRR!), which I found out as I hit Submit, and then the long explanation I had vanished. So, in short...

Bear is a 6.75 year old cat who is 100 percent indoors. He's a great cat except that he poops often but not always outside of his liter box. Sometimes, he'll go days without a problem. When he does, it's usually soft but not watery. But, even when it is soft, he'll use his liter box. When it's watery, he always does. He doesn't pee outside of the box. He has his favorite places, but they aren't set. All are outside the room his litter box is in. His food and water are in a different room.

His vet swears he's in good health.

He's been on the same food (Buffalo Blue) for a year and used the same litter brand and type since he was a kitten.

We've tried many things with limited success:
  • Locking him up with just his litter box, food, and water. This seems to help but not for more than four days.
  • Showing him the poop and scolding him. He already knows he did something bad, but this seems to help.
  • Cleaning his litter box daily. No real change.
  • Giving him a new litter box. That helped for a week.
  • Praising his proper pooping. I'm not sure if it helps.
  • Giving him completely privacy to poop but leaving the box in a pretty open area. This has help.

So, I've done everything I know to do. I've heard that Kitty Prozac can help.

I've been told I'm going to have to get rid of my good buddy soon if he doesn't stop.

So, does anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanks.

A couple tips about losing posts like that. If you have something really long typed out, select and copy it just in case something happens you can paste it back in or into notepad if the site suddenly acts up (and it often does in those sort of situations). The other is that if you're logged out, log right back in where it takes you out and asks you to log in. Doing anything else will lose your post. This happens to me a lot, if you can't tell. The third option is to keep yourself always logged in.

Ok, on to Bear: A couple quick questions.
What did the vet check for to determine that nothing was wrong? Chronic soft stools, and especially loose ones, are not normal. The cause for this needs to be determined and treated. I don't know if you've ever had a really bad bout of diarrhea yourself, but the cramping, discomfort, and soreness that goes with it isn't something that a cat needs to chronically go through - you'll see litter box avoidance if you're not lucky (as is the case).
Soft stools can be anything from an underlying protozoa/parasite or bacterial infection, to food allergies, to chronic inflammation. These have the possibility of making a cat very ill and even causing death, so please don't take him to a shelter where they either won't or can't afford to treat him properly.

Did the vet check for urinary problems? It sounds odd, but that can cause cats to poop outside the box, too.

In the meantime, while you're dealing with possible health issues, add yet another box. Scooping another box is better than scrubbing the floor.

I would have the vet check for giardia or coccidia. Those are hard to find and sometimes will only be seen 3 out of every 10 times they look! Has he been on Metronadizole or any other meds for loose stools to see if this helps?

Please don't scold him - all that will happen is he'll think pooping itself is bad and will try to not poop at all, or poop in hidden places - neither of whichi s good. Praising can work, but often there's too much time between using the box and being praised - he's not quite sure what good thing has happened.

I'd get a second opinion from the vet...my boy had poo issues outside the box. In his case, a course of Tylan powder helped immensely. I believe in his case food was a culprit - Dante doesn't do well on too much wet food (go figure) and the fishy Hills CD wet just wasn't working for him and was upsetting his tummy. Also, has your boy had blood tests, urine samples, all that good stuff - a lot of times, as was said, a UTI can also trigger poo issues.

I also added a box to the area where he was having his accidents. I'd definitely have a couple of boxes, even for one cat, and I believe it's worth trying Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract in at least one box.

Is he pooping right outside the box? Or far away? If it's right outside the box, I definitely think getting a brand new box, and a different litter, like Cat Attract, is worthwhile....he may simply no longer like that litter, or the manufacturer may have changed something in the litter over the years.

In my experience (and believe me, I feel for you), cats go outside the box as a way of communicating something is simply not right in their world - they're ill, or they hate the litter, or the box is too icky for them (whether we think it's icky or not - scooping twice a day is a must in my house!).

Oops, hey - have you cleaned the area with an enzyme cleaner - that's a 'got to' as well. Otherwise, the scent can draw a cat back to the same area.

All, thank you for the information and ideas.

To be honest, I have a country vet who while good isn't big on checking with blood and urine and stool samples and such. So, I may need to look for another one. It's good to have some ideas to at ask someone to check. I don't suppose there's a Web site with lists of good vets?

Oh, and he really only gets dry food. Wet food causes him too much soft stool. Beyond that, he'll sometimes get a treat of deli meat, but he doesn't have GI problems after it.

When Bear poops outside of his litter box, it's always in a different room, usually 20 to 30 feet away. It's not like he can't get there in time because he'll make a longer trip to do that than he would to go the litter box.

As for the praise, we praise him immediately as he's leaving the litter box but after he's actually finished. Disturbing him is very bad! Still, we praise him only if he's covered his poop too. That is another randomly occurring issue, but it bothers me much less!

For the scolding, he's an incredibly intelligent beast, and he already knows he's done wrong when he poops outside of his box. He hides when he's done so; but when he's used his litter, he's out in the open. I know it sounds crazy, but he even has different facial expressions that accompany correct and incorrect actions.

I've been cleaning the carpet and chair (He prefers two specific areas, but he doesn't stick with them either.) with Resolve with OxyClean. I can try an enzyme cleaner to see if that helps. I've finally placed aluminum foil on the chair.

I have a kitten who ocasionally poops next to her box and has chonic very soft stool for months. The vet did test urine including cultures plus tow different fecal analysis with corss referencing tests. She has been on antibiotics, probiotics and now Tylan powder.

The thing that stumps my vet is that she is gaining weight, playful and clean. She does have a slightly firm belly.

She does small better than she used to.

Have you started ruling out food intolerance or allergies? Generally if nothing else is found to be the cause of it that's the next step. Some cats can't handle certain ingredients - I have one that can't keep down corn and wheat, and another that gets terrible diarrhea from chicken.
