Me and my Siamese in NC

Hi! I'm James, and just became a cat owner. He's a Siamese kitten named Dexter, a little less than 1 year old. He was found stray as a kitten, but the people who took him in before had an older cat who was not appreciative of him.

Anyway, I've never had a cat before, so I figured it might be a good idea to join a community that might be able to provide some advice from time to time, and of course, I want to show him off.

As you can see, he's a traditional seal Siamese. I assume he's purebred, but since he was a stray, there's no way to tell I guess? I wasn't looking for a cat of any particular breed, I just wanted one that would be playful and affectionate, which he certainly is. And of course I couldn't pass him up knowing he might have to be surrendered to a shelter.

My roommates do have a dog, a 2 1/2 year old Akita/Husky mix named Valiant. I was worried about how Valiant would treat Dexter, but so far Dexter's actually been the one causing the most trouble; he'll walk up to Valiant, get nose to nose, and then swat him! Hopefully once he's neutered it won't be a problem anymore.

Welcome! Dexter is a beautiful boy.

He is a beautiful kitty! Congratulations on becoming a cat owner.

I think he may be a chocolate point rather than a seal point. Seals usually have the darker body.

Choc:

Seal:

Purebred siamese cats that meet the breed standard are not they ones you typically find as strays or in shelters. Most are mixed. Many siamese have a cross-eyed look. There are traditional siamese and modern siamese. The traditional are very "oriental" looking while the modern look more like your cat and my siamese mix. -

Both of the above cats are purebred show cats. If you look closely, you will see lots of differences between yours and these. That is because breeders sell the "pet quality" animals and show the ones that are more true to the breed standard. You typically won't find a pure bred animal that is sold as a pet but conforms to the breed standard (if it did, the breeder would be showing it!) There is really no way to tell if your cat is "purebred" or mixed - but his markings let us know that someone in the family was Siamese.

The brilliant blue of the eyes will tell you something as well. My cat (see below) has blue eyes, but they are a bit "washed out" when compared to the "show" cats I posted above.

I have a blue point siamese who is 14 years old. He has been a wonderful companion over the years.

Hah, I don't really know much about Siamese cats, I'll admit. Everything I posted was just stuff I've read in the past few days since getting him. Thanks for the warm welcome though!

You will learn as time goes on. And he really could be a seal point...I can't see him in person. Seal and Choc are so close, I have no idea why they make it two colors.

Siamese cats are really fun and unique...even the mixed ones. Blue is the most affectionate cat I have ever owned. He will kneed the air while standing on his back legs straight up like a human and ram his face into mine so hard it hurts sometimes just trying to be loved on. He loves to be up high (typical Siamese behavior) and when he was young, he could jump almost to my sholders when he played. Hands down, he has just been a great cat.

Oh...and they "talk." Siamese cats are known for "talking" and Blue is VERY vocal. Sometimes I swear I think he is saying actual words! LOL

Enjoy your kitty!

Oh man, yeah, he woke me up several times during the night last night purring and meowing while he walked all over the bed and bedroom. Maybe if I let him nap less he'd sleep more at night. :P

Welcome and congrats on your new siamese cat. I have owned siamese cats for the past 40 years. I have 3 now..Play with him in the day time and he will sleep better at night.Cats are Nocturnal but if they are kept stimulated and played with during the daytime they do learn to sleep at night.
I do hope he will be a inside only cat..To many bad things happen to cats who are allowed outside unless they are on a leash or a fenced in area..

Yes, he is going to be inside only, with the possible exception that I may decide to try walking him, time will tell. Not only do I want to keep him safe, but if he's out by himself I can't play with him.

Haha - we learned to close the door at night a long time ago with our cats. As much as I love them, they are not like dogs - they don't really do the "sleep at night" thing so well! ROFL! My siamese will sleep with me in the mornings between when dh leaves for work and when I get up for the day. He is good then, but at night, he would drive me bonkers walking on the bed.

Well I kind of like the idea of letting him sleep on the bed, and I can't put him out of the room since my roommates have their dog that he still isn't used to (the dog would also eat his food and anything in his litter box, so they're in my room too). Last night he actually slept longer than me for once though, and I slept pretty well! Here's hoping it continues that way.
