New cat meows all night long

Dorothy meows LOUDLY at night. I know I've read on here that older cats or hyperthyroid cats could do this. SPCA said she's 5, my vet thinks, based on the night meows, drinking lots of water and something about her eyes, that she may be a few years older. We got a blood panel done, I am really hoping it's not a thyroid issue or anything else, but if it is, if we get it under control with meds, do you think she'll stop the constant meowing?

I hardly slept the past 2 nights! I thought last night she was lonely, because we had Genever shut in the bedroom with us, and Dot was on her own in the rest of the house. So I slept on the couch then to give her attention, and she stopped for a bit, but then just meowed and meowed again, just walking around, meowing.

Thanks for any thoughts anyone might have...

My parents adopted an "older" DLH cat last year. They named him Oliver and this sweet boy did the same thing at night!! And my parents are OLD, so it was very, very tiring for them. They had to take naps during the day to keep up with the hours of sleep they were missing at night. The vet could find nothing wrong with him, and aged him about seven years old. The only background they had on this cat, was that his owner had passed away and the family brought him to the shelter because no one in the family wanted him. Very sad.....

Anyway, after a couple of weeks of this, things were not changing. Then my Mom contacted an animal communicator!! I never believed in this stuff, but after this I did. It was done over the phone, too.. Come ON!! But the lady said that the cat wanted a cat bed placed at the foot of their bed at night because he had one in his last home and he needed it to feel safe again. Seriously, I couldn't believe this. So they went out and got a nice, puffy and soft kitty bed with those big sides. And put it on the end of the bed, in the center. Before bed, they played with Oliver on their bed and gave him some treats when he sat in the new bed. THEN, he settled down and circled a bit and curled up and didn't move till morning. That was over a year ago, and he hasn't kept them up meowing all night ever since.

Who knows what kind of life Dot has had before you brought her into your home, but I am sure right now she is just feeling lost.... and needs some time to settle in her new home. It is times like this when I certainly wish they could tell us what they want. I am sure it is something simple, if anything at all, it might just be time that is needed for her get a routine. Hang in there she will adjust just fine.

Blue did this after Sissy died - and then we found out he was hyperthyroid. I am not sure which was the cause - but we medicated him for the hyperthyroid and got his kitten buddy Rex and now we do not have the all night meowing. I would say that, as your cat adjusts and gets to be out with Genever... (and is treated if he is hyperthyroid), the meowing will stop. Did you get him checked for the dreaded Giardia today? If he is negative, are you going to allow him around Genever tonight? See if that helps.

My Harlow did this at first when I had him locked up in the bathroom. It was the first night, at 4 a.m., when I was going in, again, to comfort him and quiet him down, that I realized his name is "Harlow." In the fog of sleep deprivation, it was clear, though I had tried for hours to figure it out earlier.

Harlow didn't want to be left alone or locked up. Different cats have different reactions to this traditional wisdom and method.

For what it's worth, after I stopped locking him up, Harlow has been quiet all night, every night, since (6 months later).

Thanks for the replies. Wow, it's like the 1 thread where all the replies aren't the same thing! Interesting to see different perspectives and ideas and thoughts.

I did have Dorothy's poo tested for giardia, and got a blood panel done. Just got a call from the vet today....... She has giardia. (i figured she would. but still bummed, as we'll have to treat both cats, but we're doing 3-day panacur instead of 10 day metro.)

She also is hyperthyroid, but seems in the beginning stages. So the vet thinks she's probably more like 10-11 than 5 years old. But I guess I'll make a new thread about that in the Health Forum. Sigh. At least she's an awesome, affectionate love bug!

I just wanted to say, after 2.5 days of being on the thyroid medication, Dorothy isn't meowing at night anymore! Last night was the first night it was quiet since she came home on Saturday. Would the meds kick in that fast? Or is she just settled in? Or both?

I am still very very tired, but now it's from waking up before sunrise the past 2 days. Yesterday because of the meowing, today because we had to give her panacur before BF got ready for work (he didn't want medicine or cat hair all over his work clothes. ).

So glad the meds seem to be working and that you're finally getting some rest. Rest makes the world a much happier place!
