Cat Fountain

So, somewhere along the line someone taught Thomas and Walter to drink out of the sink faucet. They will drink out of a bowl, but prefer to drink from the faucet. Every time I go into the kitchen or a bathroom, they RUN in and beg for a drink, especially Thomas. I don't mind it so much, but then I have to sit there and wait for them to finish (and Thomas takes FOREVER) so I can turn the faucet off again. I'd like to get them a drinking fountain, but I don't know what is out there.

Thomas prefers to drink from the stream, Walter likes to drink off of the disk of this faucet:

...but he will also drink from a stream like Thomas does. I think a stream type fountain will be best b/c they will both drink from it.

Any suggestions on brand, where to buy, etc?? Should I just go to Petsmart or something like that, or should I buy online? I have no idea. Thanks!!

I have a basic drinkwell fountain, and it has a good reservoir and nice flow of falling water. My roommate's girlfriend's cat was over for a couple days and the first thing he did when let out of his room was to run to the fountain and drink from the stream (he's a purely faucet drinker). My two bowl drinkers also love it.

Calvin is exactly that way about faucets. So we decided to get a fountain and bought the Drinkwell Platinum. We were so excited about the purchase but, unfortunately Calvin does not care for it much. He is not drinking much out of it - plays with the water once in a while but still wants to drink out of a faucet. I really hope that your little ones enjoy it more!

Drinkwell is very popular, but they're made of plastic which collects bacteria and needs to be cleaned often. The "Pioneer Pet 6022 Drinking Fountain" is all ceramic and IMO is the best. It's also very attractive compared to the Drinkwell. It can be gotten from Amazon for ~$48. I attached a link below, but if the link doesn't work, just go to Amazon, and type "Pioneer Pet".

^ I like the style of that one, and I agree, ceramic >>> plastic.

On the downside though, it doesn't actually have a stream like the Drinkwell Platinum, nor the reservoir that will last around a week with my two cats.

What I have works, but ONLY because it fits in my dishwasher, as it would be a pain in the butt to clean by hand IMO.

I bought two Drinkwell Platinums. I put one out filled up, and it lasts a week before the reservoir is empty, which is also about the time you can start to feel slime on the rim of the bowl.

I pour out whats left, pop the top off, put the carbon filter into the second clean fountain if its less than a month old, and throw the whole assembly minus the reservoir (doesn't seem to get dirty and just rinsing seems fine) and the motor after removing the outer case and inner plastic shroud which also go into the dishwasher. Comes out squeaky clean and sanitary for next use, and isn't harmed by the heat cycle (top part I put on top rack, and tall part I put on bottom rack, with small pieces in the tableware holder).

The already clean second fountain I fill up using my refrigerator's filtered water dispenser. The bottom and the reservoir both have to be filled, but fill up perfectly with the built in cut-off on my fridge, which I believe is 4qrts.

The unit then is set down on a mat, and the cable plugged in, and the stream can be adjusted to taste, but I find it is quietest at the lowest setting.

Hopefully that gives an idea of the process so you can decide if thats too much of a hassle.

Also of note, the first Drinkwell Platinum I bought I HATED!!! The motor was so noisy and it vibrated. Had I not returned it for a replacement, I would be very turned off, so take quality control into account, and when reading reviews I bet a quarter of them just have motor problems. In my experience, if you get a good motor though, and don't run it dry, it will stay good.

See, I WISH I could get one of those ceramic or stainless steel ones like what is mentioned above, but as Ducman69 pointed out, they don't have a stream, and that is what all of my cats drink from. I hate plastic bowls, I know how dirty they can get, so up until now I have had a large Corelle bowl for them to drink from, and they all eat out of small Corelle bowls. I was even looking at the fountain this evening and thought "I just wish it wasn't plastic" and was thinking about the ceramic fountain you posted! LOL How funny is that?? If someone sold a ceramic/stainless steel fountain with a stream I would buy it in a heartbeat. Someone needs to get on that!! lol

I wish I had found the Platinum version of the fountain (I got it off Craigslist), b/c I have to refill the water twice a day otherwise it starts pumping air and sounds terrible. They all love it, though. Even Nora. She wouldn't go near it at first, then she started drinking from the bowl the stream fell into...but now she is drinking from the stream like the boys and she loves it!!

Oooooh! Didn't know they were making stainless products! Nice!

Since its functionally the same as the regular 360, here's a link to the plastic one which has tons more reviews:

I've seen the 360 one, but didn't know they had it in stainless. I can't afford a $100 cat fountain, though. lol Mine was only $20. I'll stick with that for now. Thanks, though!!
