My cat is dispalying odd behavior

Four years ago my friend passed away and I moved into the house she was renting. One of the things I inherited was her cat, Faith. The cat has always appeared healthy and normal, as best as I can determine. I grew up with dogs and am a little unfamiliar with cats.
This past summer the cat started to stare at an electrical out let for hours at a time. I'd come home from work and she would be staring at this AC outlet. I'd wake up in the morning and she would be staring at the same outlet. The behavior was disconcerting. I spoke to my landlord and he thought that perhaps there were mice in the wall.

I have no history of mice, bugs or any other critters.
So we cut into the sheet rock to take a peak and found no evidence of mice. The behavior of the cat was now starting to scare me. Took the the cat to a Vet and had a full workup and the Vet gave the cat a clean bill of health.

I decided to place a book shelf in front of the AC outlet. As soon as I did that the cat seemed back to her normal self.

Now for the past two weeks the cat has began fixating on another AC Outlet. She is normally pretty affectionette but now seems oblivious to me, her food intake has fallen a bit too. I obstructed this second outlet with a beanbag and the cat just meows at the wall non stop. Do i need a different Vet or a priest? Is this normal behavior for a cat? It is getting to the point where I am afraid to come home because this cat is starting to scare me. Any ideas?

I dunno, call the vet and the priest...

You might wanna tell the vet what she's doing. You never know, maybe she can hear electricity, kinda like when we hear a bug hit a bug zapper.... Maybe the outlet is making noises that only a kitty can hear. Thier sence of hearing is better than ours. maybe replace all the outlets? If it's an apartment the old wires could be loose and making a noise.

As for the priest, a little prayer never hurt anybody... My cats used to all sit in a circle under the cieling fan (while it was off) and stair at it. Sometimes they would even hiss at it. I got the serious willies and we called our pastor over and he prayed with us in the livingroom. It was really just a comfort thing for me, but it helped a lot. The cats stopped shortly after.

to you! Hope it gets better

It could be the flow of air. My cats will both go toward the crack in the back door when some wind whistles through.

You shouldn't be scared. Faith probably hears something. It does not have to be mice. It could be termites. It could be a draft or even an electrical thing. Ask the landlord if the wirings are new or old? You may need an electrician not a priest.

I'm sorry I don't have a suggestion for you but I must say your post cracked me up You write very well, I read it like a short story!

Brian how old is this cat? If she is 8+ she could have had a small stroke, or she could just hear bugs in your wall. They have very acute hearing. I don't think you need to freak out about it and call a priest unless her head starts spinning around and green goo spits out her mouth. my cats can hear carpenter ants in the outside firewood- you probably have bugs in your wall.

I was thinking maybe a draft in the wall. I know at my last place I could feel air coming out of the outlets!! I'm sure my cats could hear it too.

Your wiring should be checked out. We had a cat that did that in the upstairs hallway for months, and it never occurred to us that Pussywillow could hear electricity. Then we had trouble with the circuit breakers and got the upstairs rewired, and she immediately stopped eatching the wall and ceiling.
We humans can often hear electricity - think of high tension wires - and cats' hearing is much, much more acute.

I had a cat that was very interest in sniffing outlets. I think that she was just smelling the air that escaped through them.

Thanks to everyone for the input. Faith is 10 or 11 years old. She's doing it again this morning. I have covered this electrical outlet with a beanbag and she is sitting on the beanbag near the electrical outlet.

That's not unusual behavior. A lot of cats like to lie on electrical appliances, whether because they're on and warm or off but still emitting energy.

I would be worrying about the wiring too, that was my first thought when I read your first post. Ask your landlord to get a electrician in to check things over.

If not the wiring then there is something, mouse or insects, back there.

I'm sorry for your loss of your friend, hurray for you for rescuing your friend's beloved cat. Well done taking her to the vet for a check up, that would have been my first advice.

Welcome to the forum!

There might be something wrong with the a/c. It could be making a different noise that your cat can pick up on, that you don't notice?

This is freaky! And I must admit, I giggled at your vet/priest comment, too.

I've had a couple cats stare under a shelf in my basement - I have never, ever seen anything under there - dead or alive.

I hope you'll keep us posted on how this goes. (I'd have the electricity checked, as well)

Your post cracked me up (just the part about calling a priest to exorcise your possessed cat).

My first thought was mice in the wall too. However, if none were found, who knows what she is hearing. Whatever it is, it is driving her crazy. I guess it would be like us hearing a humming noise and not being able to find it. After awhile, it would get to us too!

I think I would try to play some music in that area or get an air purifier..something to obstruct the noise near that outlet. Maybe if the other noise interferes with whatever she is hearing, she will stop being so intent on it.
