Hunter came in as a citizen surrender. Ten years old, and a soulful face and piercing green eyes. "Someone moved into the house who is allergic to cats." He wasn't eating much, and he was showing signs of diabetes. But I had him out of his cage yesterday. He was curious, friendly, and appreciative of petting. He walked as if he had arthritis, too.

Yogi and Booboo were fairly wild and usually not amenable to human interaction, but they seemed to be improving.

Garfield was a long-timer, but he got sick.

We also had two lovable long-timers who tested FIV positive. I didn't hear for sure, but I suspect they're gone, too. The shelter is trying to avoid an epidemic.

Oh gosh, every time I see more than one name I know it is you, Mike.

I don't know how you take it. I would be a basket case to loose these precious little lives.

Well, they are not anonymous. We all see what beauties they were. And they will have my prayers tonight.

God bless you too, Mike for your gentle heart.

Hunter was also front declawed. And his left rear foot was messed up; none of the claws would retract, and several pointed odd directions. But he WAS sweet and gentle. I can imagine him chasing butterflies at the Bridge, suddenly able to move like he could 10 years ago.

He looked like he had lived a pretty full life, and I told the director I would bring him home if there was any chance of saving him, but I suspect he was just too far gone. He's been with us for four weeks or so, and that's longer than most city shelters keep such obviously "downhill" cats.

Just tragic. I'm so sorry. I get very depressed some days from helping at the shelter. I only go once a week, and sometimes it is hard to go. However, I usually get there anyway, and I'm glad I do. But it is hard on me sometimes.

What you are going through at your shelter is just horrific. I probably couldn't take it.

I admire your courage.

How tragic, what beautiful babies they were. It breaks my heart to pieces at all of the unnecessary lives lost at these shelters.

If only every cat born could be spayed/neutered.... Can you imagine how many lives would be spared this sort of despair?????

One researcher has said that the least expensive way to take care of the pet overpopulation problem is to provide free spay/neuter to low-income families. I'd be willing to give it a try.
