Kirby just came home from the vet after having some x-rays of his hips and legs. Everything looks good and they didn't see any injuries but the vet did find one very tiny slightly cloudy spot in the bone of his upper left hind leg that she said is panosteitis. Apparently it's more common in puppies but Kirby should grow out of it in a few weeks. Until then we have a stronger pain medication for him and he'll need to rest. Anyone have any experience with this?

I don't have any experience with panosteitis. I just wanted to tell you that's great that Kirby doesn't have any injuries. I'm sorry that he has panosteitis, hopefully the next couple of weeks goes by quick for him, and he out grows it right away.

I have only heard of it in large-breed puppies. Just out of curiousity, what food does he eat? It's thought to be linked to diet in dogs, but I'm not sure if it's the same for cats.

He eats mostly Wellness Core dry and wellness wet also.

I wonder. . .in puppies, it's usually linked to a too-high calcium level (recommended under 1.2% for large-breed pups). Wellness CORE cat food has a calcium level of 1.8%. Wellness Kitten formula has a calcium level of 1.1%. Like I said, I don't really know if that's something that would affect a cat (it rarely affects small-breed puppies, and cats are about the same size), but it might be worth trying something a bit lower in calcium.

It would make for a good discussion with your vet, but since I'm sure Pano is rare in cats, he may not know much on the subject. Worth asking about anyway.

I've been doing some reading about it online today and saw the calcium info. I wonder though if it would help to change his diet at this point. He had such bad diarrhea from the food change when we adopted him and this is supposed to heal in a few weeks. It would take a while to transition him and by then he should be better.

The vet is going to call and check in on Monday to see how he's doing so I'll definitely ask her then. She did say that she's seen it in dogs so it's definitely worth asking about. I seem to adopt the cats that come down with the rare illnesses. My Cookie died of an intussusception last summer which the vet only sees at most once a year and not in an adult cat.

I'm glad he did an xray to find out what it was. I must admit, it's something I've never heard of either!

I had never heard of it either and I'm not even sure I saw the spot she showed me on the x-ray
But I love my vet so I'll believe her. We haven't been able to give Kirby much of his new pills because apparently he's a butthead about swallowing them. It's easy to get them in his mouth and it looks like it went down...and then out it comes
Luckily he seems to be feeling better even without medication. Last night he even jogged across the kitchen

I've had 2 like him so far, who refuse to take their meds! However if we drop 1of our pills on the floor, they'd be right there to eat it.
I'm glad he's feeling better
