Tonight, Bear's diarrhea has gotten so bad that he is just leaking it everywhere. He is sleeping on paper towels right now because I can't put fabric in there - he will ruin it. This is HORRIBLE! I called the ER vet and they told me to give him a dose of metro on top of the Panacur he is already taking. This poor cat!

I am going broke with this - we have spent well over $1100 in the last 2 weeks on Bear and Blue. I am very frustrated with the shelter and with myself. Since Bear is really not showing any improvement and is, as a matter of fact, somewhat worse now than he was before he was diagnosed, I can't even see an end in sight. When will this get better????
((

Thank you all for listening to me whine. I just don't know what to do next. NOTHING is working! And I feel so sorry for my poor little kitten.

Pancur is normally used for worming ( this often makes for very loose stools)... Metro is a multiple use drug

I feel for you. I had something very similar happen with one of my kittens. I finally had to confine her to a bathroom. I had no choice, she would have had a mess all over my house. I swear it was from the Metro. She was given Jarodopholis which is a probiotic. It cleared her diarrhea within a day. Almost like a miricle. There is a thread below about a kitten with diarrhea. It talks about intestional flora and lack there of from antibiotics and metro. Sorry I don't know how to quote but I copied the paragraph. Hang in there it will get better! Once Bear is done with the antibiotic or Metro, the probiotic will kick in and that will firm up his stools.

All his tests indicated that Clavamox killed his intestinal flora which caused a bacterial overgrowth initiating an inflammation on his intestinal tract. All this time Bugsy only had one day of fever (way later on), so he did not have an infection, per se - his problem is really a bad inflammation and lack of intestinal flora. The specialized tests did not show enough inflammation to be compatible with IBD, nor pancreatitis. The problem is, as I already know, Bugsy's immune system is not the best in the world, and he is having a hard time fighting this inflammation. He does get better to a point, but never completely better...
Both Tylan and Metro are antibiotics, Tylan being broader, so if the problem was a bacterial issue, it would been taken care of by now.
The key however was to reduce the inflammation to a point where the intestinal flora could regrow to a healthy level. Sulfasalazine seems to be doing the trick now... or it might just be time and all the probitotics he has been taking...
No bacterial issue was shown in a comprehensive fecal test run at Texas A&M.

The cat above is mine...
About Metro: Metro is a very different antibiotic, as it has anti-inflammatory properties as well, particularly effective on the intestinal tract; it is often prescribed for colitis and IBD, and works very very well controlling diarrhea. Metro is used FOR diarrhea...

Right now, Bear is taking Metro 60mg 2x a day, a dose of Panacur one time a day, and Kaopectate (sp) along with half a centrine tablet twice a day. I am giving him a probiotic as well. Still, his stools are runny and the giardia is showing up on direct fecal exams. I have a doctor culturing the stool overnight and I am to call tomorrow and get the results. I am starting to wonder if Bear has FeLV even though his snap test was negative! Something is NOT right here. Even my 14 year old cat got better with the meds (even though the diarrhea is now back since he is off the meds!)
I can't win for losing!

Sorry for what you are going through.
Panacur and metro together are pretty standard for tough cases of giardia.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Oh hun - poor Bear and poor you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing I can think of is to change the probiotic. I mentioned before we had no luck with Fortiflora, and many use straight acidophilus. But it seems like an especially bad case of giardia.
We had to go through something similar with our babies, though ours was a resistant round worm.
