Just got home from the shelter. Avery has made no progress..... She is still hissing and growling. I did manage to get her out of her cage and then she settled in my lap for pets and was better. I was able to trim both of the girls nails too. I am worried about Avery. Other volunteers are working with her too, but some are afraid to pick her up. She is learning if she is real ugly with hissing and growling most of them back off. I tried to talk with some of them in hopes they will just go ahead and pick her up. She won't attack anyone or bite (hopefully). I need to pray that someone will come in and want to have a project and be rewarded in the end with the most loving, loyal cat ever
. I did get Avery to eat soft food from my hand and then she rolled on her side to be pet. Underneath all that fear is a beautiful sweet cat just waiting to emerge
.

Pixie is doing so much better. No shaking and seems happy there (well as happy as a cat can be in that situation). She always seems to adjust quite well with whatever is thrown at her. She has been a real champion throughout this whole process. She takes things in stride and is a doll
.

Spent time in the big cat room as well. I try to work with the really scared kitties, and the really out-going ones always try to push the scared cats away to get the attention. Some of them are making progress with me. OH so many homeless cats... But this shelter gets alot of people in looking and that is a good thing

That's to bad that Avery is so scared. She doesn't understand what's happening. Maybe if everyone there does spend sometime with her, it will calm her fears a bit.

Hi and thanks for asking
. I just got home from the shelter. Avery is still growling and hissing. It is all a bluff though. And it works very well. I am able to pick her right up and everyone is so surprised. I wanted to show them that she won't bite, but just puts on a show to keep people away.

Pixie is a doll and doing just fine, although, she would like to get a home and is so sweet I can't believe everyone passes her over, black cats are not popular
.

There is good news for Avery. She is going to foster over the weekend. One of our foster volunteers is reaching out to her and will take her home (she has two other cats at home who are extremely friendly and cat oriented). This lady will work with her for a couple of weeks. Then she will come back to shelter. My concern is that as soon as she gets back she will regress into her shell. We will see and I will keep posting about them.

Pixie will go into a cage with another black friendly kitten so she will have a friend. His name is Newton and he and her are great together. They are both about seven months old too. We put them together today and they became quick friends. It might be good for Pixie not to have to be near the negative vibes Avery has been giving off and get away from her hissing/growling.

I appreciate the concern for these girls!! I know there are many like them out there, but I want to keep updating until they get adopted and appreciate the good vibes sent their way

Well you sure have mine. So many kitties need homes. I honestly just cry if I think about it.

All I can do is pray for them. And I do every night. Give them a hug from me.

Give them all a hug.

That's to bad about Avery, but maybe being fostered again will help her. I'm happy for pixie it's good that she's adjusting and even made a friend. It's to bad she and Avery will be seperated though.

I know I am sad they will be separated. The shelter cat director originally was going to send both of them to foster together but I didn't think that was in Pixie's best interest. Because, Pixie doesn't need that fostering time. She is ready for to be adopted and needs a new home and I don't want her not getting seen because she is in foster. She has a better chance at getting adopted there. Jane, the director, totally agreed with me
. Plus the lady who will be fostering Avery, has two VERY friendly cats who love other cats. So it will be better for both of them right now to be separated. When Avery comes back and Pixie is still there, we will put them all together.

Plus, kitten season will be hitting soon, and then Pixie will be competing with cute tiny kittens, and who do you think will win???!!! the kittens. So she needs to stay there. There are not many kittens in the kitten room right now and alot of people are looking at Pixie. Let's keep our fingers and "paws" crossed

I'm glad people are taking an interest in Pixie. That's good, hopefully they'll visit her and connect with her

Maybe someone else will come and see Avery and connect with her. That could still happen. It's to bad that she got so stressed over this. Our original vet used to have cats/kittens up for adoption. I used to go down there all the time to see the kitties. It was just down the street from us, so I went alot. There were a lot of cats I'd have taken (a ton believe me) anyway there were some that were scared and looked over by people, that I would have loved to take. 1 of them was scared because he had been abused. He was shivering and shaking. I wanted him so bad, I would have made him love people. But I had parents at home that wouldn't let me take him (The only reason
Lynxx
and Luna made it through the door, was because we found/rescued them ourselves. Midnight made it through the door for Luna. If we didn't find them, my mother would still have this house catfree). I still think about him, he was all grey and I'd have named him Smokey. I can't possibly be the only 1 out there, that would love to give a cat/kitten like that a chance. So I'm sure someone will come along for Avery.

You have such a big heart for cats!!
. My parents always turned away the lost/stray cats I brought home when I was young. " NO absolutely not" they would say. I like your story about "smokey". And you are right that I need people like you to come along and open their heart to those gorgeous black kittens!!! I keep praying everyday for someone like you to go to the shelter and see past their color and their sad upbringing as a feral kitten and look to the future and how special it will be for them to adopt and open up their home to a cat who will return one-hundred fold the love because of the chance they took on adopting them.

I'm surprised you have trouble adopting out black cats. When I was little I always wanted a black cat named Midnight. Midnight started off as an all black kitten, that's why I named him that. Luckily he still has mostly black in him. And I always wanted a tuxedo named Spooky. The black cats (epecially kittens) get adopted quickly here, before the other cats.

Then you live in one of the strangest places I've heard of
. Black cats are always the most prevalent around here, especially since everyone who is anyone knows about the Cubs' black cat curse.

Yes, the black cat problem is so heartbreaking. Right now, at the shelter where I volunteer, there are about 12 aging black kittens that are not yet adopted. They are over 6 months, and with their siblings in cages. They don't get out of the cages much. It's very depressing.

I actually had a (very minor) exchange with one of the shelter workers who kept visiting a lovely orange and white kitten every time he came by. I said, finally, "You are playing favorites!" This guy is a front desk guy and has a lot of influence on who people warm up to. He said, "He's so shy, I'm afraid he won't get adopted." I replied, "Look at him! He'll get adopted! It's these poor little ones who may never!." I was pointing to three brothers in a cage below the other who have been there for months. Sweet, darling, beautiful, little black boy kittens. And nobody wants them.

It just kills me.

And don't even get me started on all the adult black cats that are languishing in cages.

Don't tell me kitten season is near. I can't bear it!

Yep, it kills me too. I wish we lived in an area where the black cats were the most popular!!! Dream come true, it would be. At Animal House, there are currently five black kittens in the kitten room, all other's have been adopted. And....... Robin, you know this all to well.............. The black kittens from last year... well they have now been transferred to the free-roam room because they are too old to be kept in the kitten room anymore. I pray for them every night. BLACK CAT LOVERS WHERE ARE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please come to NORTHEAST ILLINOIS and adopt

2 local shelters here haven't had problems adopting out black cats, at least not in the last couple of months.

Back from the shelter. Avery is now in foster for a few days, and she is doing so much better. I guess she has come out of her shell and is not growling or hissing there. She won't be there very long and will come back to AHS. My worry is that as soon as she comes back to shelter, she will start up her anxiety and become fearful and scared again. I just hope she can learn that people love her and won't hurt her.

Pixie LOVES her new cagemate, a brown tabby five month old kitten. I took Pixie out and snuggled with her, I was surprised she shivered a bit. She was purring, but shivering too. She enjoyed seeing me and sat on my lap for a good thirty minutes, then I had to move on to other's that need socialization. When I put Pixie back with Shelly (her new friend) they played like crazy. They have a two story roomy cage and they were jumping from level to level and rolling around playing. I was soooo happy to see that
.

There was a new black feral kitten about six months old with the MOST gorgeous deep gold eyes. Stunning. She was so very scared and I held her and cuddled. She kept mewing and shaking. I feel so darn bad for all of these black kittens/cats who just sit in these shelters and watch all of the other more colorful kittens get homes. This new kitten there is named Cupcake! What a funny name for a pretty black kitten.
. I am turning quickly into a black cat lover.......

That's great that Avery is doing so well in foster care. Is there any way she could get adopted without going back to the shelter? There is 1 shelter here, that has foster care. The cats in foster care are listed on their website, but you contact the person who the cat lives with. You set up an appointment to meet them, at the foster care where the cat lives. They don't go back to the shelter. Is that how your shelter works?

I'm glad Pixie has found a new friend to play with, that's great!
