Does anyone know anything about this food? I just had our vet visit to discuss the return of the rodent ulcer, and possible reasons, and vet is not happy I had decided to try some raw food for Luna, since she is on the Atopica for the auto-immune condition. Which I totally understand with the salmonella etc. So...no raw. Fine. So, we're back to either the Blue Buffalo salmon or the new Basics. But...don't know much about the Basics other than its a limited ingredient and its Turkey. I've taken her off chicken-products, but not sure that turkey would be an issue. She did very well for a long time on a limited ingredient Blue Buffalo product that they discontinued.

Anyone know anything about the Basics, heard anything, or tried it?

Thanks...

That the vet and I spent and hour discussing the 3 foods, looking at ingredients, etc. and she said either try the basics OR stay on the salmon, BUT that perhaps she could have developed a resistance to the salmon. So...have discussed with the vet. I also did see Blue Basics mentioned on another thread, but I'm looking for some more info, if it exists. Thanks!

Blue basics has too many grains IMHO to attempt using it for a elimination diet

I have one who has salmon issues ( many cats do )...

What options are at the stores you shop and in your budget?

Does your vet have a basic understanding of raw? Because normally allergies are one helped by it if done right.

My vet does understand raw - her concern with our cat is since she is not getting vaccinated with her condition, that the raw would leave her more susceptible to salmonella and other food borne illnesses. Plus, she didnt like the low protein levels in the Natures' Variety Instinct Rabbit, which was what I had been trying. I've been feeding this cat Blue Buffalo dry, and Wellness wet w/ pumpkin, and then added in the raw the past month, so budget is out the window (with the addition of the medicine, its thru the roof) so my concern is her health first and foremost. We can get most foods at Petco or Petsmart, and we have two good "smaller" pet food stores that sell many other more holistic brands as well and carry the following brands:

Was the Protein to low in the rabbit?

Look at these
Wysong- new starch free has grain protein thus not really grain free
Innova Evo - multiple types now ....some cant handle as it is too rich
Blue Buffalo- wilderness
Wellness Core - see Evo
Taste of the Wild
Orijen
I suggest with caution as you will need to add fresh meat to make a protein most of us like

Thank you so much!

Of those, and knowing what we've tried, and what hasn't worked, the Innova Evo or the Orijen look like good candidates. We're trying to avoid chicken ingredients and the "typical" grains...so far peas had been okay. She had done well on fish proteins so far as well. I know there's mixed feelings about fish proteins on here, but if that is what works. That said, I came home last night to a huge "poop" problem - ICK - might be the antibiotics and increased dose of atopica she is back on...she has another sore in her mouth on her tongue that we are trying to reduce now. I could really use some positive vibes please!

Out of curiosity, did the vet explain why he felt raw was unsafe with an autoimmune disease?

Autoimmune diseases, as I understand them, involve an overactive immune system, quite the opposite of being immunocompromised. I'm not sure I understand how that'd put her more at risk for contracting diseases.

But my limited knowledge of them comes from understanding how they work in humans, not in cats, so I'd love to hear someone's more-informed insight on this to help me understand better.

Not certain, but my understanding was that her immune response was lower on the medicine, and that would leave her more susceptible to things like salmonella etc. Its also why she doesn't get vaccinated like a regular kitty anymore, and can't be boarded like a regular kitty without precautions, either.

Ahhh yeah that would make sense. If she's on something that's suppressing her immune system to combat the auto-immunity.
