Solved our litter box problem

Hi, this is Rob. I dont post much on here but thought Id share my litter box solution with you all. We had a problem with our three boys peeing outside of the box, while IN the box. Not acceptable. So after some thinking here is what I came up with.

Started out with two of these in one room.

I have only changed over one box so far. I didnt want to change both and freak them out. So far the new box is being used frequently. I took a 35Gal storage container and cut a square on one side for an entrance.

Alright, no more peeing on my baseboards and carpet, now if they go outside the box, its a simple clean up. Plus this keeps a good amount of litter off my carpet and in a contained area. Hoshi can get a bit aggressive in the litter box. Also this helps with odors and is a little easier on the eyes.

Thanks for looking.

Mine are the same lol, without the lids! And I gave up with having a litter box inside of it, I just use the rubbermaid. It was a mess cleaning out the LB then having to get the stray litter out of the bottom of the rubbermaid... exspecially when they peed behind the LB lol!!!

Only thing... what are the bags for? Cats might get their head stuck in the loops. My mom had that happen to her cat before. Luckily she was home at the time, the cat was flying from one end of the house to the other scared to death that the bag was "chasing" her.

I bet your cats love it! I will never use a standard LB again.

Thanks.

The bags are for their waste. Ive been using the bags for 6 months or so. They havent showed much interest in the waste filled bags. But ill keep an eye on them.

Very nice work. I use large tubs too, but the clear ones, don't cut holes and don't use the covers. I also use doubled grocery bags for waste. GMTA you know!

Me too. After consulting these Forums, and trying everything from normal litter boxes to dome covered litter boxes, I too have gone the TALL rubbermaid type container route. Ritz pees standing up at least half the time; she's always done this, so I knew it wasn't a behaviorial/medical issue. Add to the equation the fact that Ritz is a tall, long cat, so her urine goes 17 to 18" high (yes, I measured.....)
I opted to cut a hole in the side of the container because I wanted to make it easier for her, and more familiar. Also I read somewhere that cats like to see where and how they pee/poop, so I am using a clear, see-through box.

I too would be careful with plastic bags so close to the litter box. Ritz loves plastic bags, I've always cut the handles off before giving them to her to play with, never had a problem with them for the year I've had Ritz. But Ritz got a hold of a plastic bag with a carton of (raw) eggs in it three weeks ago. Although I was not a witness to the Attack of the Killer Eggs, I did see the evidence on the rug and wall; she hid under the bed for two hours. Three weeks later, Ritz is still scared of plastic bags that I carry into the house.

This is Tara posting.

I forget which cat of ours was playing in a bag (Nero or Neko) that they pulled off the counter, and ran around the house like that too. Nero loves to lick plastic bags (and saran wrap, newspaper, and sometimes the walls ) I haven't noticed them bother with the waste bags either yet but will keep it in mind also.
