So what do you guys do to differentiate your kittens? Especially when they look so much alike?

I have never ha a litter around to have to tell apart, but my friend would take different colors of nail polish and polish one claw one the back feet.

I watched 2 different kitten cams and there were 2 litters of almost identical kittens. They both used colored collars to distinguish the kittens.

I use small hair bands, but if the bubs are determined to remove them a dot of texta in the ear (must be reapplied each day)

If they are fluffy you can snip a bit of fur off, it grows back by 12 weeks when kitts are adopted.

That's a good question. I always wondered how people who's cats look exactly a like could tell them apart, especially ones that don't wear collars!

Breeder friend of mine had a litter of 3 cream mackerel tabby male British SH's. What she did at home (and had to in the ring) was to take a magic marker and put a color dot (small) in one ear of two of the kittens. One red and one green (I think).

At a show were she had the boys, one judge questioned the dot and everyone cracked up laughing when the breeder told the judge - well its the only way I can tell them apart!

She didn't get penalized for it

For the nail polish way, couldn't that be dangerous? If they or the mother tried to lick it off?

There is nail polish made for dogs, that's probably safer and non-toxic compared to regular human nail polish which can have some nasty chemicals.

I had 4 identical black kittens that I hand raised. I used red fast dry nail polish did the front right nail on one front left on one back right and back left. It was a big help especially during the 1am feedings when I wasn't sure who I was feeding!

I heard a lot of people using the nail polish trick. My sister had to use nail polish with her kittens (Lilly's litter). Lilly's mother tends to have 2 or more black kittens in her litters. I never thought to ask her if she was using pet safe nail polish. I am glad that this topic came up because its important to remember the safety of the kittens. I love cats but sometimes others (including myself) don't learn enough about pet safe products.

Nekochan: Do you by chance have a list of pet safe nail polish brands? I would like to pass this information on to my sister incase she has more kittens. Thank you!
